BROOKINGS – The Wings jumped out to a quick lead and doubled up the Blizzard in each period for a 6-3 Central Division win at Larson Ice Center on Friday night. The victory lifted Aberdeen into first place in the standings with 33 points, courtesy of a 16-11-2-0 mark.

The Blizzard are still tied with Bismarck for fourth in the Central Division with 30 points (14-14-1-1).

John Sladic got Aberdeen on the scoreboard less than 3 minutes into the game with an unassisted goal before Vince Marino tied the game with 5:49 left in the first off an assist from Connor Koviak. Nathan Burke’s goal with 12 seconds to play in the period gave the Wings a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Wings boosted their lead to 4-1 as Adam Pitters found the back of the net at the 15:20 mark of the second, and then, Jonathan Bendorf made the most of a power-play chance when he lit the lamp with 8:14 to play. Dylan Schuett got the Blizzard back within 4-2 off an assist from Henry Enebak with 3:42 left, and that’s where it stayed through two complete.

Riley Murphy’s unassisted goal midway through the third pushed Aberdeen’s edge to 5-2, but Derek Hammer answered less than a minute later to make it 5-3 as Jimmy Elser picked up the helper. Evan Rochowiak’s empty-net goal with 1:38 to play provided for the final margin.

The Wings held a 36-30 edge in shots on goal as Gabe Vinal earned the win in net with 27 saves. Zachary Borgiel stopped 30 of the 35 shots that he faced for the Blizzard.

The Blizzard travel to Aberdeen tonight for a 7:15 faceoff at the Odde Ice Center.
