Woman jailed on child abuse charges in Brookings

BROOKINGS — A woman from Walla Walla, Washington, is facing charges following allegations of child abuse and assault stemming from an alleged incident Sunday at a home in Brookings.

Mary Kate Blom, 23, was arrested after an investigation in the 1000 block of Third Avenue, according to information in a news release from Brookings Police Department Detective Adam Smith. She is accused of slapping and punching her 3-year-old daughter and remained in the Brookings County Detention Center as of Monday afternoon. Charges filed against Blom are aggravated assault domestic and abuse or cruelty to a minor under age 7.

Smith wrote that Blom’s daughter was examined at Brookings Health System and the South Dakota Department of Social Services assisted in removing the girl from the home.

According to a probable cause statement, Blom has lived in Brookings for a month.
