The Brookings Bombers Black 14U baseball team erupted for 10 runs in the third inning as it earned a 15-0 win in four innings over Brandon Valley in the opening game of the Mid-Summer Classic on Thursday night.

Brookings opens Mid-Summer Classic with dominant 15-0 performance

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Bombers Black 14U baseball team erupted for 10 runs in the third inning as it earned a 15-0 win in four innings over Brandon Valley in the opening game of the Mid-Summer Classic on Thursday night.

The Bombers scored in all four innings including two runs in the top of the first. Jude Meendering used some aggressive baserunning after getting hit by a pitch to open the game, stealing second base and advancing to third base on a wild pitch to get into scoring position before Nolan Krogman drove him in with a single.

Krogman stole second base on the next pitch and scored on Baker Hanson’s RBI triple to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead.

The Bombers went ahead 3-0 after Mason Diers led off with a double, advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on an error in the top of the second inning but that set Brookings up for a big inning in the top of the third.

Hanson was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Ben Schulte singled and the throw allowed Hanson to score while Schulte advanced to second base. Noah Lease drove Schulte in with an RBI single to make it a 5-0 game before an error allowed Dixon Dauer to reach.

With two runners on, Diers sent them home with a two-run triple and Grant Wipf drove in with an RBI single to put Brookings up 8-0. Wipf advanced to second base on a wild pitch before Jace Jaacks singled to put runners on the corners and Meendering drove Wipf in with an RBI single.

Jaacks, who stole second base during Meendering’s at-bat, advanced to third base on the single and scored on a Krogman RBI single to put the Bombers up 10-0. Krogman stole second base before he moved to third base as Meendering scored on a wild pitch and Hanson drove Krogman in with an RBI single to put Brookings ahead 12-0.

Schulte singled and moved up to third base on defensive indifference and a wild pitch and Eli Ellsworth walked before Andrew Hove drove in a run on a fielder’s choice to give Brookings a 13-0 lead.

Schulte finished the game off in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run single that produced the final score.

Grant Horn started on the mound for Brookings, allowing a hit and a walk with five strikeouts over two shutout innings. Kooper Henderson pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts.

The Bombers produced 14 hits in the game including three each from Diers and Schulte. Diers went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Schulte went 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and three RBI.

Meendering and Krogman also produced multi-hit games. Meendering went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, two runs scored and an RBI. Krogman went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and two RBI.

Hanson went 1-for-2 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Wipf and Lease earache went 1-for-2 with a run scored, a walk and an RBI. Jaacks went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, a run scored and an RBI.

The Bombers will have a day off on Friday before continuing the tournament on Saturday with a game against Minot at 2:30 p.m. and a game against Chaska (Minn.) at 7:30 p.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
