2024 marks the 20th running of the Beef and Eggs 5K in Brookings, an event that is widely considered the state’s premier 5K. It also serves as the USA Track and Field Dakotas Association 5K championship.
Race directors Kevin Bjerke and Ryan Egeberg were ready to enter their senior year on the South Dakota State University cross country team when they organized the first race, which earned its name from the race directors last names as well as the postrace buffet.
Since 2005, runners fast and slow have been gathering at the Brookings County Courthouse for the Beef and Eggs 5K, which is held on the Saturday of Brookings Arts Festival weekend.
The course for the July 13 race remains the same: basically, the courthouse west to Main, north a couple blocks, east to 17th Avenue and back to the courthouse, primarily run on shaded residential streets. Just steps away from the finishing line, runners will be able to feast on the traditional beef and eggs breakfast.
With $1,200 in cash prizes for the top three males and females and a tradition of being a summer reunion for current and recent graduates of the South Dakota State University cross country program, the race is known for attracting a fast field.
With a strollers-welcome policy, the race also is a magnet for citizen runners and walkers who want to join others for some morning exercise. Start time is 8 a.m.
Online registration is preferred and is available right up to race time at https://www.raceentry.com/beef-and-eggs-5k/race-information.
Packet pickup is at Jackrabbit Central, 416 Main Ave., in Brookings from 5 to 6 pm. Friday, July 12. Runners can also register at this time. Race day registration is 7 to 7:30 a.m. directly in front of the courthouse. Rain site is Fifth Street Gym.
