Adam Pangrac’s recent domination of the Jack 15 road race continued Saturday when the 36-year-old Moorhead, Minn., runner won the 62nd running of the oldest road race in the Midwest with a time of 1:32:01 (6:03 per mile pace).

Pangrac was second in 2023 and won the event in 2022 with a time of 1:27:23, good for 87th fastest time in race history.

Pangrac’s margin in 2024 was a comfortable one. Runner-up Abe Schroeder, 22, of Vermillion, took the early lead but Pangrac soon took charge. Schroeder, who ran cross country at Wayne State, finished in 1:41:07. Placing third was 2021 champion Tim Fryer, 45, of Hendricks, Minn., with a time of 1:43:27.

Elise Wieland, 25, of Des Moines, Iowa, finished sixth overall and won the women’s division with a time of 1:46:24, which is the 17th fastest time in race history for women runners.

Runner-up Chloe Munterfering, 33, of Brookings, and third-place finisher Julia Steffl, 19, of Callaway, Minn., also had top 100 performances. Munterfering, the 2023 women’s champion, ran a 1:50:32 this year to finish 12th overall. Her time was the 32nd fastest ever and only 2 ½ minutes slower than 2023 despite being 18 weeks pregnant.

Steffl, a South Dakota State University student, clocked a 1:58:59 over the 15.2-mile course from White to the Campanile on the SDSU campus, which is the 75th fastest time in race history.

There 98 individual finishers in both 2023 and 2024, which was the most since 100 in 1983. In addition, there were 23 relay teams that finished.

Among this year’s finishers were 39-year-olds Roger Mead, of Sioux Falls, and Cory Vogt, of Madison, who finished in 4:38:21 and 4:38:22, respectively. However, both were toting 30-pound backpacks and wearing boots; using the Jack 15 to get in shape for hunting.

Also this year, the Prairie Striders Running Club event had its first entrant from Hawaii and its first three-generational finish.

Dennis Brady, 75, of South Charleston, W. Va., ran his second Jack 15 in 2023 after not having run the event since 1979. The Mitchell native came back in 2024 and was joined by his daughter, Rebecca Kelley, 35, of Kailua, Hawaii. Blake Brown, 26, of Rapid City, is Brady’s grandnephew and ran both the 2023 and 2024 races.
