Team steals 12 bases on way to pair of wins in Tuesday doubleheader

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bombers Black 14U baseball team used their aggressive baserunning to fuel a sweep over Tea Area at Mickelson Middle School on Tuesday afternoon.

The wins helped the Bombers improve to 31-7 on the year ahead of their home doubleheader against Brandon Valley at Bob Shelden Field on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 14, Tea 1

The Bombers stole eight bases and had plenty of strong plays on the basepaths as they defeated Tea 14-1 in four innings via the 10-run rule.

Tea opened the game with a run on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first inning but the Bombers quickly went to work beginning with Jude Meendering’s leadoff single in the bottom of the first. Meendering stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a single by Nolan Krogman to tie the game.

Krogman advanced to second base on an error during the play and scored on Baker Hanson’s RBI single to give Brookings a 2-1 lead. Hanson stole second base and third base before scoring on an error to put the Bombers up 3-1.

Ben Schulte drew a walk and stole second base before scoring on an error that allowed Lease to reach first base. Lease stole second base and third base in the next two at-bats but couldn’t come around to score, leaving the Bombers’ lead at 4-1.

Grant Wipf and Mason Diers led off the bottom of the second inning with singles before Krogman reached on a one-out error that allowed Wipf to score. With two runners on, Hanson hit a ground ball and turned into four errors that allowed everybody to score and give the Bombers an 8-1 lead.

Schulte reached on an error in the next at-bat and Lease singled to put two runners on with one out. Henderson reached on an error and Dauer drove in a run on a sacrifice fly before Henderson stole second base, Andrew Heinze singled and Wipf doubled to put the Bombers up 12-1.

Brookings scored its final two runs on a rally in the third inning. Eli Ellsworth led off by reaching on an error and Lincoln Helmbolt singled to allow Ellsworth to advance to third base. Helmbolt stole second base before Hanson drove both runners in with an RBI double.

Wipf threw a complete game for Brookings, allowing an unearned run on one hit and five walks with 11 strikeouts.

Brookings had 13 hits in the game. Hanson went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and four RBI. Lease went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Wipf went 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Krogman went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Henderson went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Heinze went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Diers went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Helmbolt and Hove each went 1-for-1.

Game 2: Brookings 9, Tea 1

Grant Horn and Lease each drove in a pair of runs as the Bombers completed the sweep with a 9-1 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.

Brookings took an early lead by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Krogman and Hanson were each hit by a pitch with one out and Lease delivered with a two-run single with two outs to put the Bombers up 2-0.

Tea got a run back in the top of the second inning but Brookings regained control with four runs in the bottom of the second. Diers led off with a single and Heinze smacked a one-out single to start the threat. Heinze advanced to second base on a wild pitch but Diers scored on an error to put Brookings up 3-1.

Meendering delivered a sacrifice fly to put Brookings ahead 4-1 and Krogman hit an RBI double made it a 5-1 game. Krogman advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on Horn’s RBI single to put Brookings up 6-1.

Brookings scored its final three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wipf led off with a single and Jaacks reached on an error that allowed Wipf to advance to third base. Jaacks stole second base and Ellsworth drove in Wipf with a single and Jaacks scored on an error to put Brookings up 8-1. Horn drove in the final run on a single.

Schulte started for Brookings, allowing an unearned run on a walk with six strikeouts. Helmbolt finished the game, allowing one hit and two walks with three strikeouts over two shutout innings.

Brookings had 10 hits in the win. Horn went 2-for-2 and Lease went 2-for-3. Krogman went 1-for-1 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Heinze and Wipf each went 1-for-1 with a run scored. Helmbolt went 1-for-1.

Brookings stole four bases with Horn stealing two bases. Jaacks and Lease each stole one base.
