BROOKINGS COUNTY — A combine fire northwest of Bruce on Monday afternoon caused an estimated $3,000 in damage, according to a Tuesday news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
The flames on the combine were doused with a fire extinguisher, but not before they had spread into a field of soybean stover, destroying roughly six acres. A nearby stand of corn was also threatened for a time, but very little of it was burned, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote in the release.
The incident occurred in a field near 464th Avenue and 198th Street and occurred at 3:19 p.m. The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
Other responding agencies were fire departments from Bruce, Estelline and Volga.
