BROOKINGS — A resolution prohibiting open burning in Brookings County will be considered at 3:30 p.m. Thursday by county commissioners at a special meeting.
The meeting will take place in the Commission Chambers at the Brookings City & County Government Center, 520 Third St., and is open to the public.
If passed, the resolution would declare a fire danger emergency within the county because of a lack of moisture. It would stay in effect until commissioners rescind it.
Per wording in the resolution, “All open burning as defined in Ordinance #2009-02, without a prior written permit, is hereby prohibited within the boundaries of Brookings County, South Dakota, exclusive of any incorporated municipality within the county.”
The move comes amid a dry spell that, combined with harvest season, has led to an increase in fire-related incidents, including one northwest of Bruce earlier this week that damaged several acres of soybean stubble.
