BROOKINGS – The Bobcats are on a hot streak.

Not only has Brookings put together a three-match win streak, the ‘Cats won in five sets for the first time this season as they rallied from a two-set deficit to beat Brandon Valley in an Eastern South Dakota Conference match on Tuesday.

The Lynx won the first two sets, 25-23 and 26-24, before Brookings won the last three – 25-19, 25-10 and 15-11.

“We really started to put the pressure on Brandon in Set 3 – prior to that, we were giving up a lot of unforced errors; we weren’t making Brandon earn their own points,” said BHS head coach Jodi Melius. “Starting in Set 3, we really started to take care of the ball and make them earn their points offensively.

“Michaela Jewett did a really great job of serving in the fourth set and really set the tone heading into Set 5. Her serving gave us the confidence to be able to be aggressive, go after it and play fearlessly.”

After dropping the first two sets, the ‘Cats went up 7-3 early in the third and never let the Lynx get closer than three points throughout the set.

Set 4 was all Bobcats as they quickly built a 13-2 advantage and rolled to the win to even the match at two sets apiece.

The final set was tight as the teams traded points to 4-4 before the ‘Cats scored two straight for a 6-4 advantage.

That was when the scrappiest rally of the match happened as both teams scrambled to keep the point alive before a double block by Kylie Tucker and Johanna Miller gave the Bobcats the point for a 7-4 lead and forced a Brandon Valley timeout.

The momentum was short-lived as Macyn Flanigan put down one of her match-high 16 kills to get the Lynx back within two points.

Brookings scored a pair of points for a 9-5 advantage and still led 12-9 following a Regan Weisbeck kill from the outside.

But Brandon Valley scored three straight to get within one before a Lynx hitting error made it 13-11 for the Bobcats.

Jewett served up an ace and then Tucker hammered a kill out of the middle to put the set – and match – away.

Jewett and Tucker each tallied four service aces while Jewett added 10 kills, 39 set assists, a block assist and 20 digs to her stat line. Tucker chipped in with 12 kills, seven block assists and 11 digs.

Weisbeck led the Bobcat offense with 15 kills and added three block assists while Kailee Bartels and Miller contributed eight kills apiece. Miller tacked on seven block assists and Bartels notched four as Miranda Ysbrand and Ashlyn Borah collected 19 and 11 digs, respectively.

Brookings, 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the ESD, travels to Sioux Falls on Saturday to face Lincoln in a 2:30 p.m. match.
