Brookings scores 25 runs in a pair of wins on Tuesday night

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Bombers Black 14U baseball team had a great night at the plate as they earned a sweep in a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Post 15 on Tuesday night.

Brookings won the first game 17-8 and the second game 8-5.

The Bombers are now 36-8 on the season and will return home for a doubleheader against Yankton at Bob Shelden Field on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 17, Sioux Falls 8

Ben Schulte and Baker Hanson each had four-hit games as the Bombers won a slugfest by a score of 17-8 in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

The game was wide open from the opening inning when Jude Meendering led off with a single. Meendering was tagged out advancing to third on a single that was Schulte’s first hit of the night but Hanson drove him in to give Brookings a 1-0 lead.

The rally continued when Hanson advanced to third base on the play and scored on another error to put the Bombers up 2-0. Nolan Krogman reached second base on an error in the next at-bat and stole third base before scoring on Noah Lease’s groundout to put Brookings ahead 3-0.

Andrew Heinze started another rally with a one-out double in the top of the second. After Grant Wipf struck out for the second out of the inning Meendering drew a walk, Schule singled and Hanson drove in two runs with a single to put the Bombers ahead 5-3.

The Bombers had another response in the top of the fourth. Schulte reached on an error before advancing to second on a Hanson fly out but Krogman was hit by a pitch before a double steal put Schulte and Krogman in scoring position.

Lease capitalized with an RBI single and Dixon Dauer followed up with a double to give Brookings a 7-4 lead.

The Bombers created some separation in the top of the fifth inning when Wipf lead off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With a runner in scoring position, Meendering drove Wipf in with a double, then advanced to third and scored on a groundout by Schulte.

Hanson kept the rally alive with a single and Krogman reached on an error before another double steal put two runners in scoring position. Lease drove in a run with a single to give the Bombers a 10-4 lead.

Kooper Henderson led off with a walk in the top of the sixth inning and Heinze followed up with a single before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Although Wipf lined out and Meendering struck out Schulte drove in two runs with a single to extend the lead to 12-4.

Brookings put the game away with a five-run seventh inning. The rally began when Henderson reached on an error with two outs before Heinze walked. Henderson advanced to third base on a wild pitch and Heinze stole second base before Henderson scored on another wild pitch to make it a 13-8 game.

Eli Ellsworth walked to runners on the corners and Meendering drove in a run with a single to put the Bombers up 14-8. Schulte tripled to drive two runners home in the next at-bat before Hanson walked and Schulte scored on an error to cap the scoring.

Wipf started the game for Brookings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and four walks with two strikeouts over six innings. Ellsworth pitched the seventh inning, allowing two hits with a strikeout.

Brookings tallied 20 hits in the game. Schulte went 4-for-6 with a triple, five RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. Hanson went 4-for-5 with a walk, a run scored and three RBI.

Meendering went 3-for-5 with a double, a walk, three runs scored and two RBI. Lease went 3-for-6 with three RBI and a stolen base. Heinze went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs scored.

Wipf went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Dauer went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Krogman drew a walk and scored three times.

Game 2: Brookings 8, Sioux Falls 5

Brookings scored the first run of the game when Schulte’s one-out single helped him reach second base on an error. After reaching third base on a passed ball, Schulte scored on Hanson’s RBI groundout.

The Bombers took control in the top of the third. Schulte had another one-out single to start the rally before stealing second base and advancing to third base on a ground out.

Krogman cashed in with an RBI double before Lease drove in a run with a triple and scored on Dauer’s RBI single to put Brookings up 4-1. Diers kept the rally going with a single before Dauer scored on an error to give the Bombers a 5-1 lead.

Brookings added to its lead in the top of the fifth when Andrew Hove walked and Diers singled. Hove advanced to third on a double play in the next at-bat but scored on Wipf’s two-out RBI single to put Brookings up 6-1.

The Bombers plated a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly by Diers and an RBI single by Jace Jaacks on the top of the sixth inning. Yankton scored a final run in the bottom of the sixth but the Bombers finished the game off to earn the win.

Grant Horn started for the Bombers, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and four walk with a pair of strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Henderson pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits.

The Bombers had 11 hits. Schulte went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Diers went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Lease went 1-for-2 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Wipf went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Hanson went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, a stolen base and an RBI. Krogman went 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored, a stolen base and an RBI. Meendering and Jaacks went 1-for-4.

Lincoln Helmbolt and Heinze each drew walks.
