Jennings Huntimer had three hits and Hayden Jones drove in three runs as the Brookings Bombers Red 13U baseball team rolled in its opening game of the Mid-Summer Classic with a 15-0 victory over Sioux Falls on Thursday night.

The Bombers opened the game in the top of the first inning with some aggressive baserunning by Dario McSweeney after drawing a lead-off walk. McSweeney stole second base before advancing to third on a Mason Burzlaff groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cooper Drawdy to give Brookings a 1-0 lead.

The Bombers scored two more runs in the second inning with a rally that began with a leadoff single that was Huntimer’s first hit. Huntimer stole second and third base shortly after and scored on a Ty Delbridge single to make it 2-0. Delbridge scored on Ty Johnson’s RBI single to make it 3-0 after two innings.

Brookings doubled its lead in the top of the third inning. Burzlaff singled to begin the rally and was replaced by Hayden Smidt as a courtesy runner. Smidt stole second base and advanced to third base on a wild pitch before Jones was hit by a pitch with two outs. Jones advanced to second base on defensive indifference before Huntimer singled to drive in both runners to make it a 5-0 game.

Huntimer stole second base to put himself in position to score on Delbridge’s single to give Brookings a 6-0 lead.

Mason Burghardt led off the top of the fourth inning with a double and advanced to third on Grayson Wagner’s single. Wagner advanced to second base on defensive indifference and Burghardt scored on an error to put Brookings ahead 7-0.

The Bombers weren’t done in the top of the fourth inning as they loaded the bases before Drawdy delivered an RBI single to put the Bombers up 8-0. Jones cleared the bases with a triple to give Brookings an 11-0 lead and Huntimer singled to drive in a run and put the Bombers up 12-0.

Brookings loaded the bases again with back-to-back singles by Smidt and Brady Nutter before Jennings scored on a wild pitch. Nutter scored on a passed ball in the next at-bat to give the Bombers a final 15-0 margin.

The run support was enough for Pitts, who threw a complete game allowing two hits and a walk.

The Bombers racked up 13 hits in the win including Huntimer’s 3-for-3 day with three runs scored, three RBI and three stolen bases.

Jones went 1-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Drawdy went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Delbridge went 2-for-2 with a stolen base, a run scored and two RBI. Johnson went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and an RBI. Burghardt went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Wagner went 1-for-2. Nutter went 1-for-1 with a run scored. Burzlaff went 1-for-3 with a run scored. McSweeney drew a walk and scored twice. Lucas Kahler drew a walk.

The Bombers will have an off day on Friday before continuing pool play with two games on Saturday. Brookings will face Marshall Black at 1 p.m. and Fargo Blue at 5:30 p.m. before the championship rounds take place on Sunday.
