Bombers split Watertown doubleheader

Brookings erupts for 11 runs in a Game 2 win at Bob Shelden Field on Thursday night

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bombers Red 13U baseball team split a doubleheader with Watertown at Bob Shelden Field on Thursday night.

Brookings has a 27-15 record this year and will face Watertown in the opening game of the State Tournament at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Game 1: Watertown 12, Brookings 4

The Bombers chipped into the deficit with a rally in the bottom of the first inning that began when Dario McSweeney led off with a single, stole second base and advanced to third on Mason Burzlaff’s groundout.

Cooper Drawdy drove in McSweeney for Brookings’ first run of the game before Hayden Jones singled, sending Drawdy to first. Jennings Huntimer drove in Drawdy to cut the lead down to 8-2.

Watertown scored a run in the top of the second inning to go ahead 9-2 but Brookings scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jones led off with a single and stole second base and scored on a Huntimer single to cut the lead to 9-3. Huntimer stole second before scoring on Ty Delbridge’s single to make it a 9-4 game.

Watertown scored three runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away.

Jasper Pitts started for Brookings and allowed eight runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk in 0.1 innings. Ty Johnson pitched the final five innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Brookings had six hits in the game including a 2-for-3 performance from Jones. Junes also scored a run and stole a base.

McSweeney went 1-for-2 with a stolen base, a walk and a run scored. Drawdy went 1-for-3 with a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI. Huntimer went 1-for-2 with a pair of stolen bases, a walk, a run scored and two RBI. Brady Nutter went 1-for-1 with a double.

Game 2: Brookings 11, Watertown 2

Brookings jumped ahead in the bottom of the first when McSweeney led off with a sing and Burzlaff walked. McSweeney and Burzlaff executed a double steal and McSweeney scored on Jones’s groundout for the first run of the game.

The Bombers never looked back as they added two runs in the bottom of the second. Johnson walked before Nutter hit his second double of the night before Burghardt drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Burzlaff walked later in the inning to put runners on the corner and a double steal allowed Nutter to score to go ahead 3-0.

This set up the Bombers to land the big blow in the third inning. Jones singled to lead off the inning followed by a Huntimer walk and a Delbridge single to load the bases. Johnson drove in a run with a single and Huntimer scored on an error to put Brookings ahead 5-0.

Nutter was hit by a pitch in the following at-bat before an error allowed Delbridge to score. McSweeney drove in a run with a single before Drawdy and Jones delivered RBI singles of their own to put Brookings ahead 9-0.

Watertown got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning but Brookings scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away. Burzlaff reached on an error with one out in the inning and a two-base error on Drawdy’s single allowed Burzlaff to score. Drawdy scored on a passed ball in the following at-bat for the final run.

Jones started the game for Brookings, walking two batters with four strikeouts over three innings. McSweeney pitched in relief, allowing two unearned runs on two hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts over three innings.

Brookings tallied 10 hits in the game. McSweeney went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI. Drawdy went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Jones went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Huntimer went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.  Delbridge went 1-for-4. Johnson went 1-for-3 with a walk. Nutter went 1-for-2 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored.
