Bombers White splits doubleheader with Watertown

Brookings drops first game, but rebounds to win second on Tuesday

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bombers White 13U/14U team split a doubleheader against Watertown on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Watertown took game one 8-1 and then the Bombers bounced back with a 12-5 win in game two. Brookings is now 4-20 on the season. They will close out the regular season on Thursday with a doubleheader at Aberdeen.

Game 1: Watertown 8, Brookings 1

A seven-run sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and the White Sox kept the Bombers off the board the rest of the way.

Watertown scored the first run of the game in the top of the third. The White Sox led off the inning with a single and then that base runner came home on another single to make it 1-0.

Brookings tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Mack Nelson was hit by a pitch with one out and then stole second and third. He then scored on a ground out from Jonas Murray to make it 1-1. Kuddyer Baugher hit a two-out triple but was stranded on third.

Watertown led off the sixth with five-straight singles to take the lead. Then a two-run double and a run from a ground out made it 5-1. Another RBI single, a bases loaded walk and a run on a wild pitch pushed the lead to 8-1 heading into the final half inning. Teagan Wallace drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the inning but Brookings was unable to score any more runs.

The Bombers had two hits and Baugher had both of them as he was 2-for-2. Murray had an RBI and Nelson stole three bases.

Baugher pitched the first five and two third innings. He gave up six earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Brookings 12, Watertown 5

Brookings jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings of game two and didn’t look back as they were able to salvage a doubleheader split.

The Bombers scored four runs in the first inning. Delton Brownell walked to begin the inning and Nelson was hit by a pitch. Brownell scored on a ground out from Murray and Nelson came home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Jonathan Lacher-Starace walked and scored on an error. Jaxson Nuerharth then hit a single and scored on a single from Aiden Adelmann to push the lead to 4-0.

Liam Johnson singled to lead off the second and Brownell hit a single with one out to put two runners on. Johnson scored on a Nelson ground out and Brownell scored on a Murray single to make it 6-0 heading into the third.

Watertown scored a run on a passed ball and then an RBI single cut the lead to 6-2. Another run from a passed ball and another RBI single made it 6-4.

Brookings answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Neurhart was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored on a single from Bode TeKony. Adelmann was walked and Landon Mosley was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Kale Weiker then hit an RBI single and TeKony scored on a passed ball to make it 9-4. Brownell followed with an RBI single and Weiker and Brownell each scored on a passed ball to make it 12-4.

Watertown scored on an error in the fourth to make it 12-5 but the White Sox were unable to score any more runs.

Brookings had 10 hits in the win. Murray was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Adelmann was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Weiker was 1-for-2 with an RBI and TeKony was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Brownell was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Johnson was 1-for-1. Neuerharth was 1-for-2 and Nelson had an RBI without a hit.

Brownell pitched the first four innings of the game for the Bombers. He gave up five earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and five walks. Hudson Vincent pitched the final inning and gave up no hits and had one strikeout.
