BROOKINGS —The Brookings Cubs scored a run in each of the first five innings as they earned a 15-3 win over the Elkton Snappers in seven innings at Bob Shelden Field on Monday night.

The win helped Brookings improve to 14-4 ahead of their next game against the Sioux Falls Brewers at Bob Shelden Field on July 26.

Elkton started the night well, scoring on an error and a sacrifice fly by Aidan Stewart to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But Brookings got a run back in the bottom of the first when Rhett Zelinsky hit a one-out single and Parker Winghart drove him in with an RBI double.

Brookings followed a similar formula to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning. Jackson Honkomp drew a one-out walk and stole second base before scoring on Tucker Wookey’s RBI single to knot things up at 2-2.
The Cubs broke through in the bottom of the third in a rally that began with a Zelinsky walk. Zelinsky advanced to second on Noahl Buss’s groundout, Winghart was hit by a pitch and Henry Hammrich gave Brookings the lead on an RBI single.

Tyler Kreutner popped out for the second out of the inning but two runs scored on an error to give Brookings a 5-2 lead.

The Cubs never looked back from there as they scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Zelinsky and Buss each reached on a hit-by-pitch and Winghart singled to load the bases with one out. Hammrich drove in his second run of the game on a groundout before Kreutner drove in a pair of runs with a single to make it an 8-2 game.

Brookings put the game away with a seven-run fifth inning that began with back-to-back walks by Noel Burgos and Wookey. Chase McDaniel and Zelinsky each drove in a run with singles before Buss walked and Winghart drove in a run with another RBI single.

Hammrich singled and Kreutner drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to cap the big inning.

Elkton scored the final run of the game on an RBI double by Logan Kuehl in the top of the seventh inning.

Wookey pitched a complete game for the Cubs, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits and five walks with three strikeouts.

The Cubs had 10 hits in the game including a 3-for-3 night by Winghart. Winghart also hit a double, scored three times and drove in a pair of runs.

Zelinsky went 2-for-2 with a walk, three stolen bases, four runs scored and an RBI. Hammrich wnet 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.
