The Brookings Bullets 16U baseball team split a doubleheader against the Yankton Blacksox on Tuesday night. The Bullets won the first game 15-10 and lost the second game 12-3.

YANKTON — The Brookings Bullets 16U baseball team split a doubleheader against the Yankton Blacksox on Tuesday night. The Bullets won the first game 15-10 and lost the second game 12-3.

The Bullets are now 4-30-1 on the year and will have a doubleheader at Renner beginning Sunday at noon.

Game 1: Brookings 15, Yankton 10

Wes Van Ede drove in three runs and three different players drove in a pair of runs as the Bullets won 15-10 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Yankton opened the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and another run in the bottom of the second inning but Brookings responded with four runs in the top of the third inning.

Parker Witte was hit by a pitch to lead off the third before Parker Neilsen drew a walk. Connor Jones struck out for the first out of the inning but Tre Sonnenburg drew the first of four straight walks that included bases-loaded free passes by Sutton Schneider, Rylan Hesser and Van Ede. Schneider later scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead down to 5-4.

The third inning set the stage for Brookings to jump ahead in the top of the fourth inning. Nielsen drew a one-out walk and Sonnenburg hit a two-out single to start the rally before Schneider drove in a run with a single to tie the game at 5-5. Yankton ran into more control problems from there, allowing a walk to Rylan Hesser and bases-loaded walks to Van Ede and Charlie Richter before Brennan Cordes was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and give Brookings an 8-5 lead.

Yankton tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning but Witte singled and Witte walked to begin another rally in the top of the fifth inning. Jones singled before Witte and Nielsen scored on an error to give Brookings a 10-8 lead and Schneider drew a one-out walk before Jones scored on a passed ball to put the Bullets up 11-8.

Brookings staged a final rally in the top of the seventh inning when Sonneburg drew a one-out walk. Schneider and Hesser followed up with singles and Van Ede drove in a run with a single to put Brookings up 12-8. Richter was hit by a pitch before Cordes drove in a run with a single and Camden Reicks drove in two runs with another single to give Brookings a 15-8 lead.

Jones started for Brookings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts over 5.1 innings and Schneider allowed two unearned runs in the seventh inning while allowing one hit and a walk with a pair of strikeouts over 1.2 total innings.

The Bullets had 11 hits in the win. Jones went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Schneider went 2-for-4 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Hesser went 2-for-3 with two runs, two walks and an RBI.

Van Ede went 1-for-2 with three walks, a run scored and three RBI. Witte went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Sonnenburg went 1-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Cordes went 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI. Reicks went 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Game 2: Yankton 12, Brookings 3

Yankton jumped out to an early lead, scoring a run in the first and second innings. Richter led off the top of the third inning with a walk and stole second base before Reicks and Witte drew one-out walks. Richter scored on an error in the next at-bat before Brookings mounted a two-out rally that included a single by Jones and walks by Sonnenburg and Schneider to give Brookings a 3-2 lead.

The Blacksox tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third inning before breaking the game open with a nine-run fourth inning.

Reicks started the game, allowing seven runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks with a strikeout. Richter threw 0.1 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk with a strikeout. Hesser got the final two outs of the game.

The Bullets had five hits. Jones went 2-for-3. Nielsen went 1-for-3. Reicks went 1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored. Schneider walked twice. Witte, Richter, Cordes and Reicks each had a walk. Richter also stole a base.
