Brookings Bullets split doubleheader against Aberdeen Smittys

Team picks up its first win of season on Tuesday afternoon

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bullets 16U team split a doubleheader against the Aberdeen Smittys on Tuesday night.

The Bullets won the first game 14-4 in five innings and then fell in the second game 14-9. Brookings is now 1-2-1 on the season and hosts a doubleheader against Watertown on Thursday. The first game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 14, Aberdeen 4 (5 inn.)

The Bullets had 12 hits and were able to win via the 10-run rule in the first game.

Aberdeen took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but then Brookings took control. The Smittys first two runs of the game came on back-to-back RBI doubles.

Brookings responded with seven runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. A single from Parker Witte, a walk from Parker Nielsen and a single from Connor Jones loaded up the bases with no outs. Witte and Nielsen came around to score on an error. The Bullets then took the lead on an RBI single from Tate Sonnenberg and Rylan Hesser followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 4-2.

Brennan Cordes was walked with the bases loaded and Sonnenberg scored on a ground out. Hesser then scored on a ground out as well and the Bullets took a 7-2 lead into the second inning.

Brookings added a run in the second on an RBI single from Wes Van Ede, but the Smittys cut the lead to 8-3 in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly.

Witte hit a single in the bottom of the third and then scored on a Jones ground out to make it 9-3. The Bullets then added five more runs in the fourth.

Sonnenberg hit a one-out single and Cordes was hit by a pitch and Camden Reicks hit a single to load the bases up with two outs. Witte then hit Sonnenberg home with a single and Cordes scored on an error to make it 11-3. Jones then cleared the bases with a double to give the Bullets an 11-run lead going into the fifth.

The Smittys scored one run in the fifth but Sutton Schneider forced a strikeout and a ground out to end the game.

Jones was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Witte was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Sonnenberg and Reicks were each 2-for-3 with an RBI and Van Ede and Hesser were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Nielsen was 1-for-3.

Schneider pitched a complete game for the Bullets. He gave up four runs, one earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Aberdeen 14, Brookings 9

The Smittys jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back in game two. They scored four runs in the first inning. The first two runs came from an error and the next two came from fielder’s choices.

Aberdeen added three runs in the second. Back-to-back RBI singles and a run from a wild pitch made it 7-0 heading into the third.

Brookings scored its first two runs in the bottom of the third. Nielsen was walked and Jones hit a single to put two runners on with two outs. Vince Doblar then hit both of them home with a single to make it 7-2 heading into the fourth.

The Bullets then cut the lead to 7-5 in the fourth. Schneider hit a single, Cordes was walked and Witte was hit by a pitch to load the bases up with two outs. Schneider scored on a Nielsen single and Witte came home on an error to cut the lead to two.

Aberdeen extended the lead to five in the top of the fifth. The first run of the inning came on a wild pitch and an RBI single made it 9-5. A run on a fielder’s choice made it 10-5 heading into the sixth.

Brookings cut the lead back to two in the bottom of the sixth. Cordes reached on a dropped third strike, Witte reached on a fielder’s choice and Nielsen loaded the bases up with a walk. All three base runners scored on errors to make it 10-8 heading into the final inning.

The Bullets answered with four RBI singles in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 14-8 heading into the final half inning. Schneider hit a single to lead off the bottom of the seventh and then scored on an error. However, the Bullets were unable to score any more runs and Brooking had to settle for a doubleheader split.

Brookings had seven hits in the game. Doblar went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Nielsen was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Schneider was 3-for-4 and Jones was 1-for-4.

Van Ede got the start for the Bullets and pitched one inning. He gave up seven runs, five earned, on five hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Charlie Richter pitched the next five innings and gave up three earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Hesser pitched the final inning and gave up four earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk.
