MONROE — A Lennox man died Oct. 1 from injuries sustained in a Sept. 19 crash in McCook County.
Preliminary crash information indicates Samuel R. Wipf, 72, of Parkston, the driver of a 2022 GMC Yukon, was traveling westbound on state Highway 42 near the intersection of 451st Avenue. The driver of a 2002 Ford Ranger, Billy Joe Poppenga, 61, of Lennox was southbound on 451st Avenue and stopped at a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 42. Upon entering the intersection, the vehicles collided.
Wipf and three passengers in the Yukon all sustained minor injuries. Poppenga sustained life-threatening injuries, and his passenger, Penny Sue Poppenga, 58, of Lennox, received serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Billy Joe Poppenga died from his injuries on Oct. 1.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
