ELKTON – Corn obstructing an intersection caused a two-vehicle accident that resulted in one woman being injured, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident was reported at 7:55 a.m. Friday and occurred at the intersection of 218th Street and 487th Avenue in rural Elkton, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.

Brandi McDowell, 39, of Elkton, was traveling south in her 2008 Chevy Equinox and Susan Sudtelgte, 64, of Elkton, was traveling west in her 2009 Ford F150, Sebring said.

“The vehicles had slowed at the intersection but due to the unharvested corn in the field on the northeast side of the intersection, (the) views were obstructed. The vehicles then collided at the intersection,” Sebring said.

McDowell was transported to the Brookings hospital by the Elkton Ambulance with unknown injuries, he added.

The Chevy sustained $8,000 worth of damage and the Ford sustained $2,500 worth of damage, Sebring said.

Also responding was the Elkton Fire Department.

The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
