BROOKINGS — Community Blood Bank is partnering up with SDSU American Society of Civil Engineering on Sept. 30 to host a campus blood drive between 9 a.m. and noon and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. with donor registration in the Student Union. Donors can schedule a donation by logging onto cbblifeblood.org, selecting “events” and September 30. Those donating receive a $20 Starbucks gift card as a thank you.

Community Blood Bank will also join the SDSU Student Nurses Association to host a two-day campus blood drive on Oct. 2-3 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and from 2:30 to 5 p.m. (both days) with donor registration in the Student Union. Donors can schedule their donation by logging onto www.cbblifeblood.org, selecting “events,” and October 2 or October 3 then SDSU or call Community Blood Bank 605-331-3222. Those donating receive a $20 Starbucks gift card as a thank you gift.

“Blood is a precious gift to patients requiring a blood transfusion. With just one donation a volunteer blood donor will provide life for up to 3 community patients,” Lauri Hoffmann, the program coordinator for Community Blood Bank, said. “When a person decides to roll up their sleeve and donate, it only takes 30 minutes for the act, but the gift can last a life-time.

"With fall weather setting in, we see an increase in blood usage due to people completing elective surgeries before the end of the year. We also see more accidents on the roadways because of the movement of deer and other field animals. It is important to be ready for traumas coming through emergency departments in our area," Hoffmann continued. "Blood is one of the foundations for medical preparedness. Join in to provide hope to your neighbors, friends, and family. Donate blood with us on the SDSU campus (on Sept. 30, Oct. 2 or Oct. 3).”

Community Blood Banks is a nonprofit, cooperative of Sanford and Avera Health. Community Blood Bank is not associated with any other blood bank organization and is the sole blood provider to 36 local area hospitals. A person can donate blood every 56 days. When you donate blood with Community Blood Bank your blood stays local for our community patients in need.

Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form found at www.cbblifeblood.org), weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health the day of the donation. Please bring an I.D. It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluid prior to donating.  For more information log onto www.cbblifeblood.org or call Community Blood Bank at 605-331-3222.
