Bobcats finish 12th at Huron Invitational

Posted

HURON — The Brookings Bobcats had a rough morning, finishing 12th at the Huron Invitational and the Broadland Creek Golf Course on Thursday.

The Bobcats finished with a team score of 333, which was 45 strokes over the par score of 288.

“I felt like we were close in moments (Thursday) to get some momentum but we just struggled to score in a positive way,” Brookings coach Andy Lee said. “I think most of our guys would say they were disappointed in how they played today and that’s okay. It shows that they care.”

Rhys Heiberger led the way for Brookings, tying for 42nd place with a score of 81. The junior also hit a groove with seven straight pars during his round and was one of the juniors that Lee will rely upon going forward

Tyson Lunn tied for 50th place with a score of 83, Jase Bauer tied for 55th place with a score of 84 and Mason Diers rounded out the team scoring, tying for 58th place with a score of 85.

Issak Earley placed 63rd with a score of 86 and Andrew Heinze tied for 64th with a score of 87.

While the outing was disappointing, Lee believes it is a learning experience his team can use going forward.

“I think today was a bit of a wake-up call,” Lee said. “We had been playing pretty well along with placing in good spots. We just came off our season low in Pierre on Tuesday, which was a playable course. We just couldn’t keep the big numbers away and ran into some trouble at times which really cost us.”

Watertown finished first at the invite with a team score of 294. Pierre finished one shot behind with a score of 295 and Harrisburg was two shots off the lead with a team score of 296. O’Gorman finished fourth with a score of 299 and Yankton rounded out the top five with a score of 305.

Pierre’s Sawyer Sonnenschein won the invite with a round of 68, one shot ahead of Harrisburg’s Charlie Swift (70) and two shots ahead of Watertown’s Max Stemwedel (71). O’Gorman’s Taten Mauney finished fourth with a score of 72 while Watertown’s Jaden Solheim and Parker Riley finished tied for fifth with a score of 73.

The Bobcats will look to rebound when they travel to the Aberdeen Central invite at the Moccasin Creek Country Club at 10 a.m. Tuesday and Lee believes that the time between invites should help his team prior to their next meet.

“We have been playing a lot the last week and a half and it will be nice to slow things down and get some more practice time in.” Lee said.
