ABERDEEN — A 67-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Anderson to Bergen Tetzlaff and a two-point conversion with 23 seconds remaining helped the Brookings Bobcats improve to 3-0 on the season with an 8-7 victory over Aberdeen Central on Friday night.
The touchdown came as the Bobcats struggled to find traction offensively until Anderson hit a streaking Tetzlaff on a deep route to give Brookings its first points of the night.
On the two-point conversion, Anderson and Tetzlaff hooked up again on a pop pass that was the difference in a game that was dominated by defense.
The Golden Eagles drove into Brookings territory on their first drive of the game, but the momentum stopped when Gabe Stern stepped up to tackle Riley Waldo in backfield on a 4th-and-4 to keep Aberdeen Central off the scoreboard.
Aberdeen Central returned the favor in the second quarter when the Bobcats called a sweep on a 4th-and-3 at midfield but LaVonte Carter was stopped short. Aberdeen Central had another chance to score before the half but Brenner Waldrop’s pass was just out of the reach of Brody Aesoph on a fourth down in Brookings territory to eventually send the game to a scoreless draw at halftime.
The Bobcats had another chance to score in the third quarter when Aesoph was taken off the field on a stretcher after taking a hit to the head. A bad snap on the following play allowed Brookings to recover a fumble and the Bobcats drove into Golden Eagle territory before penalties forced Brookings into a 3rd-and-24 situation.
The miscues proved costly as Drew Johnson’s 47-yard field goal was short with 1:32 left in the third quarter. Although the Bobcats got the ball back to open the fourth quarter, Cordell Rychlik intercepted an Anderson pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown to give Aberdeen Central a 7-0 lead.
But the Bobcats’ defense continued its dominance, extending its scoreless streak to 12 quarters to give the offense a chance. While Brookings was out of timeouts, Tetzlaff darted down the sideline after catching Anderson’s for the touchdown and the ensuing two-point conversion helped them remain undefeated.
After improving to 3-0, the Bobcats will host Pierre at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium at 7 p.m. next Friday.
