Bombers Black splits doubleheader against Aberdeen

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team split a doubleheader against Aberdeen on Friday afternoon and Mickelson Middle School.

Aberdeen took the first game 9-7 and then Brookings bounced back with a 4-0 win in game two. The Bombers are now 34-8 on the season and play doubleheader against Sioux Falls Post 15 on Tuesday at Bob Shelden Field and the first game is set to start at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Aberdeen 9, Brookings 7

The Bombers fell behind 9-2 and then scored five runs in the sixth but were unable to complete the comeback.

Aberdeen led 5-0 after the first two innings and they scored all five runs in the second. The first two runs came from a two-run home run. Back-to-back RBI singles and an RBI double made it 5-0 and a sacrifice fly in the third made it 6-0.

Brookings scored two runs in the bottom of the third. Grant Horn and Garrett Wipf walked to begin the inning. Both runners scored on bases loaded walks to make it 6-2.

Aberdeen scored a run on a fielder’s choice in the fourth to make it 7-2. Then another run on a fielder’s choice and a run on a steal of home made it 9-2.

Dixon Dauer reached on an error to begin the bottom of the sixth. Kooper Henderson then walks and Horn hit a single to load the bases up. Schulte hit Dauer and Henderson home with a two-out single and Horn scored on an error to make it 9-5. Krogman then hit a two-run single to make it 9-7 heading into the final inning but Brookings went down one-two-three seventh.

Brookings had five hits in the game. Krogman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Schulte was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Baker Hanson went 1-for-4.

Noah Lease pitched the first three innings of the game for the Bombers. He gave up six earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Mason Diers pitched the final four innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on one hit with two strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Brookings 4, Aberdeen 0

Jude Meendering pitched a complete game shutout for the Bombers. He gave up five hits and nine strikeouts and four walks.

The Bombers broke a 0-0 tie in the fifth. Andrew Heinze reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the inning and then scored on a double from Meendering. Schulte then hit an RBI single and Hanson scored on a ground out from Krogman to make it 3-0 heading into the sixth.

Brookings added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Meendering was hit by a pitch with two outs and then scored on a double from Schulte. Aberdeen led off the seventh with a single but Meendering retired the next three batters in order to end the game.

Brookings had nine hits in the win. Schulte went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Meendering was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Dauer was 1-for-2 and Hanson was 1-for-4. Lease and Diers were each 1-for-3.
