Bombers Black splits four games at the Mid-Summer Classic

After a win on Thursday, Brookings went 1-2 over weekend

The Brookings Bombers Black 14U baseball team wrapped up the Mid-Summer Classic over the weekend, splitting their four games between Thursday through Sunday.

Bombers Black splits four games at the Mid-Summer Classic

After a win on Thursday, Brookings went 1-2 over weekend

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Bombers Black 14U baseball team wrapped up the Mid-Summer Classic over the weekend, splitting their four games between Thursday through Sunday.

After defeating Brandon Valley on Thursday night, the Bombers defeated Minot 14-6 but fell to Chaska 12-3 and Marshall Black 8-5.

Brookings is now 29-7 on the season and will host Tea for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bob Shelden Field.

Saturday

Brookings 14, Minot 6

The Bombers improved to 2-0 in pool play with a win over Minot on Saturday afternoon.

Brookings got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after Dixon Dauer led off with a single. Grant Horn was hit by a pitch with one out and Grant Wipf cashed in with a two-run double, Jude Meendering drove in a run with a triple and Nolan Krogman drove in a run with a single to give the Bombers a 4-0 lead.

The Bombers extended the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Meendering and Krogman reached on back-to-back, one-out singles, setting up an RBI single by Baker Hanson. Ben Schulte and Noah Lease followed up with RBI singles of their own and Kooper Henderson drove in two with a double and Horn drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to take a 10-0 lead.

Minot cut into the lead with six runs in the top of the fifth inning but Brookings added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Bombers loaded the bases after Meendering was hit by a pitch, Diers reached on an error and Hanson was hit by a pitch. Schulte and Lease each drove in runs with singles before Dauer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. 

Meendering scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap the scoring.

Krogman started for Brookings. He allowed six earned runs on eight hits and four walks over 4.1 innings. Diers came on in relief allowing four hits and two strikeouts over the final 1.2 innings.

The Bombers had 13 hits in the game. Schulte went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Meendering went 2-for-3 with a triple, four runs and an RBI. Lease went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, a run scored and two RBI. Krogman went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.Hanson went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Dauer went 1-for-1 with two runs scored and an RBI. Henderson went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Wipf went 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI.

Heinze had a stolen base.

Chaska 12, Brookings 3

Chaska scored seven times in the sixth inning as the Bombers dropped their first game in pool play on Saturday evening.

Chaska jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning before Brookings got a run back in the bottom of the second. 

Dauer and Diers led off with singles before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. After a fielder’s choice off the bat of Horn, Horn stole second base and Diers scored on an error for the Bombers’ first run.

Chaska scored a run on an error in the top of the third inning but Brookings got the run back in the bottom of the third when Krogman and Lease hit one-out singles before Krogman stole home.

The Bombers stayed in the game until the sixth inning when Chaska broke the game open. Schulte created a scoring opportunity with a double in the bottom of the sixth inning and stole third base before scoring on an error for the final score.

Lease started for Brookings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Diers finished the game, allowing five earned runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout over 1.2 innings.

Brookings had seven hits in the game. Schulte went 1-for-2 with a double. Lease, Dauer, Diers and Wipf each went 1-for-3. Meendering and Krogman each went 1-for-4.

The Bombers had five stolen bases with Schulte, Horn, Meendering, Krogman and Lease each stealing one base.

Sunday

Marshall Black 8, Brookings 5

Marshall broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to win a consolation game against the Bombers on Sunday afternoon.

Marshall got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning and extended its lead with a run on an error and an RBI single in the top of the third inning. 

Brookings made it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the third when Krogman led off with a double, Hanson singled and Schulte walked to load the bases before Krogman scored on a wild pitch.

Diers led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and scored on Helmbolt’s RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2 but Marshall got a run back on an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.

The Bombers made their move in the bottom of the fifth inning with a rally that began with a Meendering single. Meendering stole second base and advanced to third base on a wild pitch before scoring on an error to cut Marshall’s lead down to 4-3.

Krogman reached second base on the error and advanced to third base on a wild pitch before scoring on a Jaacks ground out that tied the game at 4-4, but Marshall’s big sixth inning was fueled by three RBI singles to give them an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

While Krogman drew a bases-loaded walk, Eli Ellsworth popped out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Hanson started for the Bombers, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with a strikeout over three innings. Meendering finished the game, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and a walk with a strikeout over three innings.

Brookings had eight hits in the game including a 2-for-2 performance from Hanson that included two stolen bases. Meendering also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases and a run scored.

Krogman went 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. Kooper Henderson went 1-for-1 with a double. Diers went 1-for-1 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. Helmbolt went 1-for-1 with a run scored and a walk. Schulte and Lease each drew walks. Schulte and Wipf each had a stolen base.
