Brookings Bombers Red splits doubleheader against Huron

HURON — The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team earned a doubleheader split on Wednesday night in Huron.

Huron took game one 3-2 and Brookings bounced back and got an 8-4 victory in game two. The Bombers are now 17-8 and will play a doubleheader against Mitchell in Brookings on July 2 with the first game starting at 12 p.m.

Game 1: Huron 3, Brookings 2

Huron scored two runs to take the lead in the bottom of the third to take the lead and did not relinquish it the rest of the way, taking the first game of the doubleheader.

Brookings took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mason Burzlaff drew a one out walk and then advanced to second on a passed ball. He made it to third on a wild pitch and came home on a ground out from Cooper Drawdy to make it 1-0.

The Bombers extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the second. Jennings Huntimer hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a Jasper Pitts walk. Huntimer made it to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out from Hayden Smidt.

Huron cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second. A pair of singles put runners on the corners with one out. Brookings got the second out of the inning but a passed ball brought in a run for Huron.

The lead off batter in the bottom of the third for Huron reached on an error. A one-out single put runners on first and third and both runners made their way home on a single to give Huron the lead. Neither team had more than one runner on base the rest of the way and Huron was able to get the win.

Brookings had three hits. Huntimer went 2-for-2 and Hayden Jones went 1-for-2. Smidt and Drawdy each had an RBI without a hit.

Ty Johnson pitched a complete game for the Bombers. He gave up three unearned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Brookings 8, Huron 4

The Bombers bounced back with a win in game two behind some solid offense.

They scored three runs in the top of the first. Dario McSweeney and Burzlaff drew back-to-back walks to begin the game. Both runners then scored on a triple from Drawdy to make it 2-0. Drawdy then scored on an error to give the Bombers a three-run lead.

A bases loaded walk made it 3-1 heading into the second. The Bombers then added two runs in the third. McSweeney reached on an error to lead off the inning and made it to second on the play. He advanced to third on a single from Burzlaff and both runners scored on a single from Mason Burghardt to make it 5-1.

An RBI double and an RBI single from Huron in the third cut the lead to 5-3. However, Brookings scored three more runs in the top of the fourth. Pitts and Lucas Kahler both reached on an error with one out and Pitts scored on a double from Brady Nutter, but Kahler was thrown out at third. Nutter scored on a single from McSweeney and McSweeney scored on a single from Burghardt to make it 8-3 heading into the fifth.

Huron scored one run on a wild pitch in the sixth, but the Bombers were able to hold them to just that run and earned the doubleheader split.

Brookings had eight hits as a team. Drawdy and Burghardt were each 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Burzlaff was 2-for-2 with an RBI and McSweeney was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Nutter was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Kahler was 1-for-2.

McSweeny and Jones each pitched three innings. McSweeney gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Jones gave up one unearned run on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.
