Brookings Bullets walk off, blow out Sioux Falls in doubleheader

BROOKINGS — It was an exciting night for the Brookings Bullets 16U team as they swept a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Post 15 on Wednesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

The Bullets came from two runs down in the seventh inning of the first game and had a walk-off victory. They followed that with a 15-0 win in four innings to get the sweep.

Brookings is now 3-17-1 on the season and plays a doubleheader at Brandon Valley on July 2.

Game 1: Brookings 7, Sioux Falls 6

A single from Carter Reicks in the bottom of the seventh tied the game and an error by the left fielder sent Sutton Schneider home for a walk-off win in game one of the doubleheader for the Bullets.

Sioux Falls scored three runs in the top of the first. Back-to-back walks put two runners on with one out and both of them scored on a single. Another run scored on a passed ball and Post 15 led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.

Brookings responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Parker Witte led off the inning with a walk. He stole second and then came home on an error. Parker Nielsen reached on the error and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2 heading into the second.

The Bullets then tied the game in the second. Wes Van Ede led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Van Ede made it to third on a Reicks single and then scored on a balk by the pitcher, making it 3-3 heading into the third.

Sioux Falls scored two runs in the top of the fourth. One run came on an error and another scored on a steal of home to make it 5-3.

Brookings got one run back in the bottom of the inning. Charlie Richter hit a one-out single and then scored on a double from Reicks.

An RBI triple pushed the Sioux Falls lead to 6-4 in the top of the seventh. Tate Sonnenberg was hit by a pitch, Rylan Hesser walked and Sutton Schneider reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases up with nobody out for the Bullets, setting up three runs to win the game.

Van Ede was then hit by a pitch to make it 6-5. The two at bat’s resulted in strikeouts, bringing up Reicks with two outs. Reicks hit a ground ball through the left side of the infield and Hesser scored to tie the game. An error by the left fielder then allowed Schneider to score and give the Bullets the win.

Brookings had 10 hits. Reicks was 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Van Ede was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Hesser went 1-for-2. Brennan Cordes, Richter and Schneider were each 1-for-4. Witte was 1-for-3.

Sonnenberg pitched the first inning and gave up three earned runs on one hit with three strikeouts and five walks. Van Ede pitched the final six and got the win. He gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Brookings 15, Sioux Falls 0 (4 inn.)

The Bullets made quick work of Sioux Falls in the second game as they won via the 15-run rule in four innings.


Brookings scored two runs in the first. Witte was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then scored on a single from Nielsen. Nielsen then scored on an error to make it 2-0 heading into the second.

The Bullets added five runs in the second. Richter and Cordes walked and Reicks was hit by a pitch to load the bases up with no outs. Witte was then walked to make it 3-0 and two more batters were walked with the bases loaded to score two more runs. Rylan Hesser then hit an RBI single Jones scored on a ground out to make it 7-0. A two-run single from Nielsen in the third made it 9-0 and the Bullets then ended the game in the fourth.

Schneider led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and scored on a single from Van Ede. Van Ede scored on a passed ball and Witte hit an RBI single to make it 12-0. Nielsen was then walked with the bases loaded and Jones was hit by a pitch to make it 14-0. Nielsen then scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Bullets the win.

Brookings had seven hits. Nielsen was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Witte was 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Schneider was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Hesser and Van Ede were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jones had two RBIs and Sonnenberg had three RBIs without hits.

Schneider pitched all three innings for the Bullets and gave up three hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
