Brookings improves to 6-4 with two wins on Tuesday night

FARGO, N.D. — The Brookings Post 74 Chutes junior legion baseball team jumped above the .500 mark by sweeping a doubleheader with the Fargo Comets on Tuesday night.

The Chutes are now 6-4 on the season and will open the Sioux Falls Invitational Tournament against the Northrop Giants on Friday at noon.

Game 1: Brookings 12, Fargo 1 (6 Inn.)

The Chutes scored eight times in the sixth inning to defeat the Comets 12-1 via the 10-run rule in the first game of the doubleheader.

Brookings scored first in the top of the third inning after loading the bases with a single by Ryder Anderson and walks by Tre Christopherson and Cooper Schneider. Jay Harris put the ball in play in the following at-bat and reached on an error that allowed Anderson to score.

The Comets answered in the bottom of the third with a run on a double play off the bat of G Jiskra but Breck Wilson led off the top of the fourth inning with a single and scored on Kysin Rauer’s two-out, RBI single.

The Chutes never looked back in the opener as they created breathing room in the top of the fifth inning. Christopherson led off the inning by getting hit with a pitch and Schneider singled to put two runners on with nobody out. After Christopherson stole third base, Harris popped out for the first out of the inning and Christopherson scored on a balk in the following at-bat before Talon Hyde hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Schneider to score.

Entering the sixth inning with a 4-1 lead, the Chutes broke the game open beginning with a double by Gavin Hemrich. Maxten Jensen reached on an error and Rauer loaded the bases with a walk before Hammrich scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1. Rauer scored on an error in the next at-bat before Schneider walked to reload the bases. Harris cashed in with a two-run single that gave the Chutes a 9-1 lead before Hyde popped out for the first out of the inning.

Nolan Wagner kept the inning going with an RBI single in the following at-bat and after a fielder’s choice off the bat of Breck Wilson, Hammrich drove in two runs with a triple for the final 12-1 score.

Harris tossed all six innings to earn the win, allowing an earned run on two hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Hammrich finished 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, a run scored and two RBI. Wagner finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Anderson went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Christopherson went 1-for-1 with a walk, a stolen base, two runs scored and an RBI. Schneider went 1-for-2 with two walks, a stolen base and two runs scored. Harris went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and three RBI. Wilson went 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Rauer went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.

Game 2: Brookings 17, Fargo 1 (6 Inn.)

The Chutes kept their bats going as they picked up a 17-1 win in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Christopherson led off the game with a single and Schneider was hit with a pitch before Harris drove in the first run of the game with a single. Hammrich walked to load the bases before Hyde was hit with a pitch and Wilson drove in a run with a groundout to put Brookings up 3-0.

The first inning continued as Wagner drove in a pair of runs with a single and later scored on a passed ball to put Brookings up 6-0. Tane Friedrich scored on a passed ball to make it a 7-0 game and Christopherson drove in a run with a single to give the Chutes an 8-0 lead.

Fargo got their lone run of the game on J Burns’s groundout in the bottom of the first inning but the Chutes’ bats didn’t let up. Brookings loaded the bases in the top of the second inning with a Harris walk, a Hammirch hit-by-pitch and a Hyde walk before Wilson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Wagner followed with a two-run double to put Brookings up 11-1.

Schneider drove in a run with a groundout in the top of the third inning and three runs on a bases-clearing triple in the top of the fifth inning. Harris drove in the final run on a groundout later in the fifth inning.

Vince Doblar started for Brookings, allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks with three strikeouts over five innings.

Christopherson went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Wagner went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and four RBI. Schneider went 1-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and four RBI. Harris went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, two runs scored and an RBI. Friedrich went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Hammrich walked twice, stole a base and scored twice. Hyde walked once, stole a base and scored twice. Rauer walked twice and scored twice. Anderson walked twice and scored once.
