MILROY — Tucker Wookey’s single in the top of the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie as the Brookings Cubs defeated the Milroy Irish 3-2 on Tuesday night.

The win helped Brookings improve to 10-2 on the season before returning for a stretch of six straight home games including Friday night’s game with the Marshall A’s.

The Cubs had to rally early as Milroy took a 2-0 lead in the early innings. Daniel Messerli started a Milroy rally after walking Tyler Patterson and hitting Levi Maeyaert with a pitch. Moses Dolan grounded out in the next at-bat but both runners moved up a base before Patterson scored on a passed ball.

The Irish mounted another rally in the bottom of the third inning when Dominic Dolan led off the third with a double. Messerli got the first out of the inning on a groundout, but Dolan advanced to third on a balk and scored on a sacrifice fly to put Milbank up 2-0.

Brookings responded in the top of the fourth inning, however, when Noel Brugos and Henry Hammrich drew walks. Tyler Kreutner struck out for the first out of the inning but Wookey walked to load the bases and Jake Ammann walked to put the Cubs on the board and Lasley was hit with a pitch to tie the game at 2-2.

Messerli settled down from there, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk with a strikeout over five innings. After Hammrich pitched a scoreless sixth inning, Rhett Zelinsky led off the top of the seventh with a single before advancing to third base on Kreutner’s two-out single. With runners on the corners, Wookey delivered breaking the tie and paving the way for the bullpen to seal the game.

Hammrich pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts and Ammann earned the save, striking out three batters over two more perfect innings.

Zelinsky went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored. Kreutner went 2-for-4. Wookey went 1-for-3 with a walk, a single and an RBI. Burgos walked, scored a run and stole a base. Jackson Honkomp drew a walk.

Dolan went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. He was the only member of the Irish with a hit.

Friday night’s game with Marshall will start at 7:30 p.m. at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings.
