Brookings wins both games by 10-run rule to improve to 11-7 on year

Bombers sweep home doubleheader with Sioux Falls

Brookings wins both games by 10-run rule to improve to 11-7 on year

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bombers Red 13U baseball team picked up a sweep as it hosted Sioux Falls Post 15 for a doubleheader at Bob Shelden Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bombers improved to 11-7 with the wins and will open the Blue Sox Bash in St. Cloud with a game against River Falls (Wisc.) at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday.

Game 1: Brookings 11, Sioux Falls 1 (5 Inn.)

The Bombers used a nine-run third inning to defeat Sioux Falls 11-1 via the 10-run rule in the fifth inning of the first game of the doubleheader.

Sioux Falls scored its lone run on a double in the top of the third inning but the Bombers mounted a threat quickly in the bottom of the third. Dario McSweeney led off the third by getting hit with a pitch and stole second and third base before Mason Burzlaff drew a walk to put runners on the corners with nobody out.

McSweeney scored on an error in the following at-bat, resulting in a Cooper Drawdy walk before Mason Burghardt popped up for the first out of the inning. Hayden Jones put the Bombers in front with a two-run single before Ty Johnson was hit with a pitch, Ty Delbridge walked and Grayson Wagner grounded into a fielder’s choice.

But the Bombers turned it on with two outs, scoring a run on a Carter Neilsen walk and two runs on a single by McSweeney. Burzlaff walked to keep the inning alive before Cooper Drawdy drove in a run after getting hit with a pitch, McSweeney scored on a wild pitch and Burzlaff scored on a passed ball.

The Bombers’ 9-1 lead held up until they put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning when McSweeney singled to reach base, stole second and third base and scored on a Burzlaff groundout. Jennings Huntimer reached on an error in the next at-bat, which allowed Lucas Kahler to walk off on an RBI single.

McSweeney went 2-for-3 with five stolen bases, three runs scored and two RBI. Kahler went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Jones went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Burzlaff walked three times, drove in a run and scored twice. Drawdy walked once, scored once, stole two bases and drove in a run. Burghardt walked twice. Delbridge walked twice and stole a base. Nielsen walked once, scored once and drove in a run. Wagner scored a run and stole a base.

McSweeney started the game, allowing one earned run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Jasper Pitts pitched a scoreless fifth inning, walking one batter.

Game 2: Brookings 18, Sioux Falls 8 (4 Inn.)

The Bombers’ offense took off early with six runs in the first inning as they won the second game of the doubleheader 18-8 in the fourth winning via the 10-run rule.

Sioux Falls scored a run on a groundout in the top of the first inning but the Bombers opened the bottom of the first with singles by McSweeny, Burzlaff and Drawdy to tie the game at 1-1. Burghardt drew a walk in the next at bat before two runs scored on an error and Burghardt scored on a wild pitch.

Ty Johnson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to put the Bombers ahead 5-1 and Kahler hit a double and another run scored on an error to give Brookings a 6-1 lead at the end of the first.

The Bombers added another run on a Burghardt groundout in the bottom of the second before Sioux Falls put together a seven-run rally in the top of the third inning to take an 8-7 lead.

Brookings responded with a seven-run frame of their own in the bottom of the third inning, which began with a leadoff single by Johnson. Wagner flew out in the next at-bat but Kahler reached on an error and a pitch hit Nielsen to load the bases for a game-tying single by Delbridge.

With the game tied at 8-8, McSweeney gave the Bombers the lead with a bases-loaded walk before Nielsen and Delbridge each scored on a wild pitches. McSweeney stole home to put Brookings up 12-8 before Burzlaff drew a walk and Jones popped out for the second out of the inning.

But the Bombers kept the rally going when Burzlaff and Drawdy scored on wild pitches in the final at-bat of the third, giving Brookings a 14-8 lead.

Wagner led off the bottom of the fourth on a single and advanced to second base on a passed ball before Kahler drove him in with a single. Delbridge drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Nielsen scored on a passed ball before McSweeney scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the game.

Drawdy went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Kahler went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Burzlaff went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, a walk and three runs scored. Johnson went 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Delbridge went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. McSweeney went 1-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases, three runs scored and an RBI. Burghardt walked twice, scored once and drove in a run. Wagner walked once and scored a run.

Johnson pitched a complete game, allowing eight runs (one earned) on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts over four innings.
