Bombers Red swept in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN — The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team was swept in a doubleheader against Aberdeen on Friday.

The Bombers lost the first game 11-3 and then fell in game two 16-7. Brookings is now 26-14 on the season and hosts a doubleheader against Watertown on Thursday. The first game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Game 1: Aberdeen 11, Brookings 3

Brookings fell behind 2-1 in the first inning and Aberdeen ran away with the game the rest of the way.

The Bombers scored one run in the top of the first. Dario McSweeney hit a double to lead off the game and then scored on a double from Mason Burzlaff. Aberdeen scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning to tie the game and then took the lead on a sacrifice fly.

Aberdeen added two more runs in the third. The first came on a ground out and then a run on a wild pitch made it 4-1. Grayson Wagner hit an RBI double in the top of the fourth to make it 4-2.

The Smittys then stretched the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth. They scored a run on a wild pitch and then a two-run single gave them a five-run lead heading into the fifth.

Brookings scored its final run of the game in the top of the fifth. A single from Cooper Drawdy, a walk from Jennings Huntimer and a single from Hayden Jones loaded the bases with one out. Drawdy scored on a ground out from Ty Delbridge to make it 7-3.

A two-run single and two runs from an error made it 11-3 in the fifth. Brookings had two runners in the sixth but were unable to score any more runs.

Brookings had nine hits. Delbridge went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Wagner and Burzlaff were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Mason Burghardt and Carter Nielsen each went 1-for-2 and Jones went 1-for-3. McSweeney went 1-for-4.

Drawdy pitched the first three innings for the Bombers. He gave up four earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and six walks. Wagner pitched the next inning and a third and gave up six runs, five earned, on one hit with six walks. Jasper Pitts got the final two outs for Brookings and gave up one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout.

Game 2: Aberdeen 16, Brookings 7

Aberdeen led 5-4 at the end of the first inning and then pulled away in innings 3-5.

McSweeney led off the game with a single and then Burzlaff was hit by a pitch. McSweeney scored on a ground out from Drawdy and Burzlaff scored on a double from Jones. Huntimer then hit an RBI triple and Delbridge followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.

Two runs came home on a double for Aberdeen in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half. Two more runs scored on an error and another run from an error gave the Smittys the lead heading into the second.

Aberdeen extended the lead to 6-4 with an RBI single in the second. Then a two-run single in the third made it 8-4. A run from a passed ball and a two-run single pushed the lead to 11-4 heading into the fourth.

Brookings scored three runs in the top of the fourth. Burghardt led off the inning with a single and then scored on a single from McSweeney. Drawdy then both McSweeney and Burzlaff home with a single to cut the lead to 11-7.

Aberdeen answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run came on a fielder’s choice and then a run from a wild pitch and a run single made it 14-7. An RBI double and an RBI single then extended the lead to 16-7 and that was the final.

Brookings had nine hits in the loss. Drawdy was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and Jones was 2-for-2 with an RBI. McSweeney was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Huntimer was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Delbridge was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Burghardt and Wagner were each 1-for-3.

Delbridge pitched the first two and two thirds innings. He gave up 11 runs, three earned, on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout. Jones pitched the final two and a third innings and gave up five earned runs on six hits with three walks.
