Brookings Bandits split doubleheader with Brandon Valley

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bandits split a doubleheader with Brandon Valley, winning the first game 4-3 and dropping the second game 11-0 at Bob Shelden Field on Friday evening.

The Bandits are 23-20 on the year and will wrap up the regular season when they travel to Sioux Falls Post 15 for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Game 1: Brookings 4, Brandon Valley 3

Austin Clark delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Bandits come from behind and win the first game of the doubleheader 4-3.

Brandon Valley put Brookings in a 3-0 hole and scored first on Nolan Pudwill’s single in the top of the second inning. Brandon Valley doubled its lead on Grady Gindorff’s RBI single in the top of the fourth inning and scored another run on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jackson Adams in the top of the fifth inning.

The Bandits’ lineup got going in the bottom of the fifth on a rally that began when Addison Ronning was hit by a pitch. David Brink singled in the next at-bat and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Jack Merritt cashed in with an RBI single and Brink stole home later in the fifth inning to cut the lead down to 3-2.

Brandon Valley brought its lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but Brookings rallied again when Brink was hit by a pitch with one out. Owen Schneider followed up with a single before stealing second base. With two runners in scoring position, Clark delivered and drove in both runners on the game-winning double.

Schneider started for Brookings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and four strikeouts over six innings. Tate Helmbolt pitched a perfect seventh inning out of the bullpen.

The Bandits had five hits in the game. Miles went 1-for-3. Brink and Merritt each went 1-for-2. Schneider went 1-for-1 and Clark went 1-for-3 with the game-winning double. Breck Hirrschoff drew a walk and stole a pair of bases.

Game 2: Brandon Valley 11, Brookings 0 (5 Inn.)

Brandon Valley scored early and added eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to earn a split with an 11-0 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.

Brandon Valley got on the board on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Pudwill in the top of the second inning. Ryland Carroll added to the lead with a double and another run scored on an error to give Brandon Valley a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Chase Leary drove in a run with a single for the first run of the fifth inning before Carroll drove in a run with a double. Drake Jellema and Peters each drove in runs with singles before Leary drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk, Brayden Knutson drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Pudwill stole home.

Tyson Antonen started the game, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits, three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Hirrschoff finished the game, allowing four earned runs on two hits and three walks in one inning of work.

Clark recorded the lone hit for Brookings on a single in the fourth inning.
