Brookings Bombers Red earns double-header split in Mitchell

MITCHELL — The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team came away with a split in a doubleheader against Mitchell on Tuesday night.

Brookings lost game one 10-3 but then bounced back with a 13-2 victory behind a strong pitching performance from Cooper Drawdy in game two.

The Bombers are now 20-10 on the season and will play in the Mid-Summer Classic in Sioux Falls this weekend. Brookings begins the tournament on Thursday at 4 p.m. against Sioux Falls East.

Game 1: Mitchell 10, Brookings 3

Mitchell outhit Brookings 12-4 in the first game and the Bombers had four errors, leading to the loss in game one.

Mitchell led 4-0 after the first two innings. They led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and that runner scored on a single. They then added three more runs on errors in the second.

Mitchell then led 7-0 through four innings. They led off the bottom of the third with a double and that runner came home on a single as well. The lead off batter in the fourth reached on an error and then scored on a wild pitch to give them a seven-run lead heading into the fifth inning.

Brookings scored its three runs in the top of the fifth. Mason Burghardt walked to begin the inning and then scored on a double from Jennings Huntimer. Huntimer then scored on a wild pitch and Hayden Jones hit an RBI single to make it 7-3.

Mitchell extended the lead back to seven in the bottom of the inning. They scored one run on an error and two runs on RBI singles to make it 10-3. The Bombers then went down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning.

Jones went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Huntimer went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Mason Burzlaff went 2-for-3. Ty

Delbridge pitched the first three and two thirds innings for the Bombers. He gave up seven runs, two earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Jasper Pitts pitched the final inning and a third and he gave up three unearned runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Game 2: Brookings 13, Mitchell 2 (4 inn.)

Drawdy pitched a no-hitter in four innings of work. He gave up two unearned runs and had five strikeouts and no walks.

Brookings jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. Dario McSweeney led off the inning with a walk and then scored on a single from Drawdy. Drawdy then scored on an error and Huntimer hit an RBI single to make it 3-0.

Delbridge reached on a single and then both he and Huntimer scored on a single on a Ty Johnson single. Johnson scored on a Grayson Wagner single and McSweeney hit an RBI single as well to make it 7-0.

The Bombers added two more runs in the second. Jones hit a one-out double and he was hit home on a triple from Huntimer. Hayden S was used as a courtesy runner for Huntimer and scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-0.

Brookings pushed the lead to 12-0 in the top of the third. Burghardt hit a single to lead off the inning and Wagner followed with a single of his own to put runners on the corners. Burghardt scored on a fielder’s choice and Wagner came home on an error on the same play. Drawdy then hit an RBI single for the final run of the inning.

Mitchell got on the board in the bottom of the inning. The lead off batter reached on an error and then scored on a ground out. Brookings extended the lead back to 12 in the top of the fourth. Huntimer led off the inning with a single and then scored on an error. Mitchell scored on a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the inning but was unable to get the lead under 10 and the game ended.

Brookings had 12 hits. Huntimer was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Drawdy was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. McSweeney and Johnson were each 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Wagner was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Burghardt and Delbridge were each 1-for-2. Jones was 1-for-3.
