The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team dropped the first game of a doubleheader against Sioux Falls on Wednesday night but then bounced back with a 22-run victory in game two.

Brookings Bombers Red falls in first game, but dominates in second

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team dropped the first game of a doubleheader against Sioux Falls on Wednesday night but then bounced back with a 22-run victory in game two.

Brookings lost the first 10-5 but then took it out on Sioux Falls in game two with the dominating victory. The Bombers are now 26-12 on the season and play a doubleheader in Aberdeen on Friday starting at 1 p.m.

Game 1: Sioux Falls 10, Brookings 5

Sioux Falls led 10-3 after the first three innings and then hung on for the win in game one.

Brookings got on the board first with one run in the top of the first. Dario McSweeney walked to begin the game and then scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0.

However, Sioux Falls five runs in the bottom of the inning. The first two runs came from back-to-back RBI singles. Then a run from a fielder’s choice and another RBI single made 4-1. The final run of the inning came from an RBI double.

Brookings cut the lead in half in the top of the second. The Bombers drew three straight walks in with two outs and Brady Nutter hit a two-run double to make it 5-3. Sioux Falls answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back RBI singles made it 7-3 and a sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 8-3 heading into the third.

Sioux Falls added two more runs in the third. The first RBI came from an RBI double and next came from an RBI single.

The Bombers were able to cut the lead to five in the top of the fifth. Grayson Wagner walked to begin the inning and McSweeney walked as well with one out. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and then both scored on a Cooper Drawdy single to make it 10-5, but the game ended after the bottom of the fifth due to time.

The Bombers had three hits. Drawdy was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Nutter was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Ty Johnson was 1-for-2.

Game 2: Brookings 27, Sioux Falls 5 (4 inn.)

The Bombers had 14 hits and drew 11 walks. Sioux Falls also had six errors in game two and that led to the dominating victory.

Brookings scored 13 runs in the top of the first. McSweeney led off with a double and then was hit home by a Mason Burzlaff single. Burzlaff scored on a steal of home and Drawdy scored on an error to make it 3-0. Hayden Jones then came home on a fielder’s choice and Ty Delbridge scored on a ground out to push the lead to 5-0.

Carter Nielsen hit an RBI single and Wagner scored on a wild pitch, which made it 7-0. Drawdy drew a bases loaded walk, McSweeney scored on a wild pitch and Jones hit an RBI single to make it 10-0. Jennings Huntimer then came to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared the bases with a triple to extend the lead to 13-0.

Sioux Falls scored three runs from bases loaded walks and another run on an error to make it 13-4 heading into the second.

The Bombers added four runs in the second. Wagner scored on a wild pitch and Nielsen scored on a Drawdy sacrifice fly to make it 15-4. Jones then hit a two-run single to push the lead to 17-4.

Brookings scored just one run in the top of the third. Jasper Pitts reached on an error with one out and Beau Thompson hit him home with a double to make it 18-4. An RBI single from Sioux Falls in the bottom of the inning made it 18-5.

The Bombers then put the game fully away with nine runs in the fourth. Sioux Falls walked the bases loaded to begin the inning and both Burzlaff and Drawdy scored on wild pitches. Jones then scored on a Huntimer ground out to make it 21-5. Pitts hit an RBI single and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 23-5. Then a two-run double from Burzlaff and a two-run single from Drawdy made the final 27-5.

Drawdy went 1-for-1 with four RBIs and Burzlaff went 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Jones went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Huntimer went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Pitts and Thompson each went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Nielsen went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Johnson went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Mason Burghardt went 1-for-2.

Huntimer pitched the first three innings and gave up five earned runs on two hits with four strikeouts and eight walks. Lucas Khaler pitched the final inning and gave up two hits and had a strikeout.
