Brookings Bombers Red wins two of three in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team went 2-1 at the Mid-Summer Classic in Sioux Falls over the weekend.

After winning their opening game on Thursday, the Bombers won two games on Saturday but then fell in their final game of the weekend on Sunday. Brookings is now 23-11 and plays a doubleheader at Tea on Tuesday. The first game of that doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

Saturday

Brookings 6, Marshall 4

The Bombers broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth to pick up the win in their first game on Saturday.

Brookings jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings. Dario McSweeney was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Mason Burzlaff followed with a walk. Jennings Huntimer then came to the plate with two outs and hit one to center field and rounded the bases for a home run to make it 3-0.

Ty Johnson led off the second inning with a single and Mason Burghardt followed with a walk. Johnson made his way to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out from McSweeney, which gave the Bombers a four-run lead.

Marshall tied the game in the top of the fourth. They led off the inning with a walk and put runners on second and third after a double. Two RBI singles and a run from an error cut the lead to one and another RBI single tied things up.

Cooper Drawdy hit a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth for the Bombers. He then stole second and scored on a balk by the pitcher, which gave Brookings the lead. Johnson then led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4. Brookings then sent Marshall down one-two-three in the seventh to secure the win.

Brookings had five hits. Huntimer was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Johnson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Drawdy was 1-for-3.

Ty Delbridge pitched the first three and two third innings. He gave up four runs, two earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Grayson Wagner pitched the final three and a third and gave up no runs and two hits with four strikeouts and two walks. 

Brookings 13, Fargo 8

The Bombers pulled away again in the late innings as they scored seven runs in the final two innings to get the victory.

Fargo led 2-0 after the first inning. They led off the bottom of the first with a triple and then back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Two more walks then gave Fargo two runs.

Brookings got on the board in the top of the second. Delbridge and Johnson hit back-to-back singles with two outs and Delbridge then scored on a single from Burghardt to make it 2-1.

The Bombers then took the lead with five runs in the third. All five runs came with two outs. Drawdy started the rally with a double and then scored on a Hayden Jones single. Huntimer then hit his second home run of the tournament and this one was an inside the park home run. Delbridge and Johnson then hit back-to-back singles and Delbridge scored on a single from Burghardt. Wagner then hit Johnson home with a single and the Bombers led 6-2.

Fargo answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run came from a sacrifice fly. The next one came from a single and then a run on a passed ball made it 6-5.

Drawdy led off the fourth and reached on a single. Carter Nielsen ran for Drawdy and made his way to third on a single from Jones. Nielsen then scored on an error to make it 7-5.

Brookings then scored six runs in the fifth. Buzlaff came to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out and hit Burghardt home with a single. Drawdy then hit a two-run single to make it 10-5 and a two-run triple from Huntimer pushed the lead to 12-5. Delbridge then hit Huntimer home with a single and the Bombers took a 13-5 lead into the final half inning.

Fargo scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth but was not able to complete the comeback. They loaded the bases with nobody out and then scored a run on a passed ball. Another run scored on a ground out and an RBI single made the final 13-8.

The Bombers had 17 hits as a team. Huntimer was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Burghardt was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Drawdy was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Delbridge was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Wagner was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jones and Burzlaff were each 2-for-4 with an RBI. Johnson was 2-for-4 as well.

Drawdy pitched the first four innings for the Bombers. He gave up eight runs, five earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts and six walks. McSweeney got the final three outs and gave up three hits.

Sunday

Pierre 11, Brookings 2

The Bombers couldn’t keep the momentum going in the final game of the tournament as Pierre came away with the win.

Pierre led 7-0 after the first two innings. They scored one run on an RBI single and a two-run triple gave them a 3-0 lead heading into the second. A run from a balk in the second and another two-run triple pushed the lead to 6-0 and an RBI single stretched the lead to 7-0.

A run from a wild pitch in the top of the third gave Pierre an 8-0 lead. Two runs from an error and a RBI single in the top of the fourth made it 11-0.

Brookings avoided the shutout with two runs in the final half inning. Burzlaff hit a two-out single and then made it to second on a fielder’s choice. He then scored on a Jones single and Huntimer followed with an RBI single to make the final 11-2.

The Bombers had seven hits. Huntimer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jones was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Drawdy was 2-for-3 and Burzlaff was 1-for-1. Delbridge was 1-for-2.

Wagner pitched the first inning and two thirds. He gave up seven earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Jones pitched an inning and a third and gave up four runs, three earned, on three hits with one strikeout and three walks. McSweeney pitched the final two and gave up no runs and one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
