Brookings Chutes sweep double-header against Marshall with two comeback wins

Two come-from-behind victories led to a doubleheader sweep for the Brookings Junior Legion Chutes in a doubleheader against Marshall on Tuesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings Chutes sweep double-header against Marshall with two comeback wins

BROOKINGS — Two come-from-behind victories led to a doubleheader sweep for the Brookings Junior Legion Chutes in a doubleheader against Marshall on Tuesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings is now 19-9 on the season and plays a doubleheader at home against Sioux Falls West on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 4, Marshall 3

A four-run fifth inning allowed Brookings to come back from a three-run deficit and the Chutes shut the door on Marshall in the final two innings and got the win in game one.

Marshall scored all three of its runs in the top of the second and all of them came on the same play. They loaded the bases with two outs and a triple cleared them and made it 3-0.

Brookings then got its offense going three innings later. Tre Christopherson singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and then stole second. Jase Bauer reached on a fielder’ choice and both he and

Christopherson came home on a double from Tane Friedrich. Will Conrad then hit an RBI triple to tie the game and he made his way home on a Nolan Wagner single to give the Chutes the lead.

Marshall had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh but Christopherson got the batter to fly out to Bauer in right field and the Chutes came away with the win.

Brookings had seven hits in the win. Friedrich was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Wagner was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Conrad was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Bauer and Ryder Anderson were each 1-for-3. Christopherson was 1-for-4.

Jay Harris pitched the first five innings for the Chutes and got the win. He gave up three earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Christopherson pitched the final two innings and got the save. He gave up two hits and had two strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Brookings 15, Marshall 14 (8 inn.)

A bases loaded walk tied the game in the eighth for the Chutes and Cooper Schneider then came home on a wild pitch to win the game in walk-off fashion for Brookings in game two.

Marshall scored the first seven runs of the game. They scored two runs in the first inning on a triple. Marshall then had a two-run single and two runs from an error to make it 5-0. An RBI single and a sacrifice fly then made it 7-0.

Brookings got on the board in the fifth. Anderson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then Christopherson reached on an error and Cooper Schneider hit a bunt single to load the bases. Bauer hit a two-run single and Scheider scored on a pitch to make it 7-3 heading into the sixth.

Marshall answered with five runs in the top of the sixth. A two-run triple and an RBI single pushed the lead to 10-3. Then a hit batter with the bases loaded and a run on a passed ball made it 12-3.

Brookings cut the lead to 12-9 in the bottom of the inning. Conrad singled to lead off the inning and Kysin Reuer and Anderson were walked to load the bases. Christopherson and Schneider then each hit RBI singles to make it 12-5. Harris hit an RBI single of his own two batters later and Wagner hit a two-run single to make it 12-8. Harris then scored on an error to make it a three-run game heading into the final inning.

Marshall scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a balk, but Brokings then forced extra innings with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Reuer singled and Christopherson was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with one out. Hyde ran for Reuer and scored on an error and Christopherson came home on a sacrifice fly to make it 13-11.

Wagner then came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a two-run single to tie the game, but Brookings couldn’t get the winning run home. Marshall’s second batter in the eighth hit an RBI single to give them the lead. A walk from Anderson, Schneider reaching on an error and Bauer getting hit by a pitch led to the bases being loaded with two outs in the bottom of the inning. That set up the dramatic win for the Chutes.

Brookings had 11 hits. Wagner was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Schneider was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Harris was 1-for-4 with two RBIs Bauer was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Christopherson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Reuer was 1-for-3. Conrad was 1-for-5.

Maxten Jensen pitched the first two and two thirds innings. He gave up seven runs, three earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Friedrich pitched the middle three and a third innings and gave up five runs, three earned, on three hits with one strikeout and two walks. Anderson pitched the final two and gave up two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
