Bullets compete in doubleheaders with Watertown, Huron

The Brookings Bullets 16U baseball team competed in a pair of doubleheaders, traveling to Watertown on Friday night and hosting Huron at Bob Shelden Field on Saturday morning.

The Bullets fell to 3-29-1 on the season ahead of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Yankton. The doubleheader will begin at 4 p.m.

Friday

WATERTOWN — The Bullets traveled north to take on the Red Sox on Friday evening. They lost the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 12-2 and the second game by a score of 18-2.

Game 1: Watertown 12, Brookings 2

Watertown jumped out to an early lead scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning, two runs in the second inning, two runs in the third inning and five runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead.

Brookings mounted a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning that began with walks by Parker Witte and Parker Nielsen. Connor Jones doubled to bring both runners home for the Bullets’ lone run of the game.

Watertown scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to win the game via the 10-run rule.

Jones started for the Bullets, allowing 10 runs (four earned) on five hits and six walks with a pair of strikeouts over 3.2 innings. Witte finished the game, allowing two earned runs on three hits and a walk over 0.2 innings.

Sutton Schneider recorded the other hit for Brookings, going 1-for-2. Witte also stole a base in the loss.

Game 2: Watertown 18, Brookings 2

Watertown scored twice in the bottom of the first inning before scoring 16 runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Jones led off the top of the third inning with a single and scored on a pair of errors after Tate Sonnenburg’s single. Sonnenburg advanced to second base on the play, advanced to third base on Wes Van Ede’s groundout and scored on a passed ball later in the inning.

Van Ede started for Brookings, allowing 10 runs (three earned) on seven hits with a strikeout over 1.1 innings. Sonneburg recorded one out and allowed eight runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks. Brennan Cordes allowed two hits while recording one out in relief.

Brookings recorded four hits. Rylan Hesser went 2-for-2. Sonnenburg went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Jones went 1-for-1 with a run scored. Camden Reicks had a stolen base.

Saturday

BROOKINGS — The Bullets’ lineup had a tough time getting going as they lost to Huron by scores of 12-0 and 16-0 at Bob Shelden Field on Saturday morning.

Game 1: Huron 12, Brookings 0 (6 Inn.)

Huron’s lineup got going early as it scored eight of its 12 runs in the first two innings in a 12-0 win in the first game of the doubleheader.

Huron scored twice in the top of the first inning before scoring six times in the second inning. Huron added another run in the fifth inning and scored three times in the top of the sixth inning to win via the 10-run rule.

Charlie Richter started for the Bullets, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits and six walks with a pair of strikeouts. Hesser pitched in relief, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and a walk with a strikeout in two innings.

Nielsen went 1-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base and Tate Sonnenburg went 1-for-2.

Game 2: Huron 16, Brookings 0 (4 inn.)

Huron doubled up on its offensive success, earning the sweep with a 16-0 win in the nightcap.

Huron scored three runs in the top of the first inning and four runs in the top of the third inning before plating nine runs in the fourth inning to win by the 10-run rule.

Schneider started for Brookings, allowing nine runs (six earned) on six hits with four walks and a strikeout. Nielsen pitched one inning in relief, allowing seven runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks.

Sonnenburg had the lone hit for Brookings with a double in the bottom of the first inning. He also drew a walk.
