BROOKINGS — A pair of SDSU runners took home first place at the 20th annual Beef and Eggs 5K in Brookings on Saturday.

The overall winner was Cormick Logue, 21, of Erie, Kansas, who will be a senior at South Dakota State University. His time of 15:39 (5:02 pace) was nearly a minute faster than second-place finisher Tyler Boltjes, 45, of Beresford. Boltjes is a regular at the Prairie Striders Running Club event and holds the second, third, fourth and now fifth fastest times for a 40-49-year-old male in race history. Rod DeHaven’s 2007 mark of 15:20 is No. 1.

Finishing third was another SDSU runner. Sam Castle, 19, of Sioux Falls, clocked a 16:54.

Fourth went to former Brookings resident Caleb Vukovich, 29, now of Pierre, who ran a 17:39. Fifth went to 16-year-old Trevin Lounsbury, a member of the Brookings High School track team, with a time of 17:48.

Women’s winner was Kayla Christopherson, 23, of Austin, Minn., who just completed her eligibility at SDSU. She finish 10th overall with a time of 18:25.

Finishing second and third were a couple high school phenoms. Second went to Sadie Pettengill, who just finished her eighth grade year at Sioux Falls Christian, and clocked a 19:10 to finish 13th overall. Brandon Valley standout Addison Scholten, 16, was 14th overall with a time of 19:53.

Fourth went to Addison Smetana, who just finished her senior year at Brookings High School. Smetana, 18, clocked a 21:25 to finish 22nd overall. Fifth went to Josie Vlieger, 16, of Huron, with a time of 22:27, 24th overall.

While Logue and Christopherson comfortably distanced the runner-up finishers, neither were able to climb in the race’s challenging list of top 10 performances.

Six runners did make it into the race’s age group top 10 list. In addition to Boltjes, Pettengill is fifth in the under 17 category; Adrienne Bender, Brookings, is third in female 50-59 (22:45); Rich Reid and Nancy Scholl, both of Brookings, are eighth in the 60-69 category, 23:01 and 28:44, respectively; and Robin Ammon, 70, of Vermilion, is eighth in the male 70+ category with a 26:56.

There were a total of 95 finishers.

Prior to the start of the events, race directors Kevin Bjerke and Ryan Egeberg, were honored for starting the race in 2005 and directing it every year since.
