The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team remained .500 on Thursday as they split a doubleheader against Pierre on Thursday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Hot offense leads to doubleheader split for Bombers 13U

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team remained .500 on Thursday as they split a doubleheader against Pierre on Thursday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Pierre came from behind and took the first game but the Bombers responded with a 10-run victory in game two. Brookings is 6-6 will have five days off as the Bombers don’t play until June 12. They host a doubleheader against Huron that day with games starting at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Pierre 13, Brookings 10

Pierre scored seven runs in the final two innings and that propelled them to the victory in game one as each team had 12 hits.

Pierre took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an error. Brookings responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning. Dario McSweeney led off the inning with a single and then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. He then made his way home on a single from Mason

Burzlaff and it was 1-1 heading into the second.
Pierre scored five runs in the top of the second. The first run of the inning came on a triple and a run on an error made it 3-1. Another triple scored two runs and an RBI single made it 6-1.

The Bombers tied the game again in the bottom of the second. Carters Nielsen was walked, Grayson Wagner singled and McSweeney was hit by a pitch to load the bases up with two outs. Burzlaff was then hit by a pitch and Cooper Drawdy was walked to cut the lead to 6-3. Mason Burghardt was then walked as well and Hayden Jones tied the game with a two-run single.

Brookings took its first lead in the bottom of the third. Ty Johnson hit a single, Ty Delbridge walked and Nielsen singled to load the bases up with no outs. Johnson scored on a fielder’s choice and Nielsen scored on a McSweeney single to make it 8-6 heading into the fourth.

The Bombers extended the lead to 10-6 in the bottom of the fourth as Mason Burghardt and Jones hit back-to-back singles with two outs and both scored on a single from Johnson. That’s when Pierre took over and outscored the Bombers 7-0 in the final two innings.

All of Pierre’s runs in the fifth came with two outs. An RBI single cut the lead to two and then a two-run home knotted things up at 10-10 heading into the final inning. Pierre then took the lead on a fielder’s choice in the sixth and extended the lead to 13-10 with a two-run single. Drawdy hit a two-out single in the bottom of the inning but the Bombers were unable to score any runs.

Jones and Johnson were each 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Burzlaff was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Bughardt was 1-for-3 with an RBI. McSweeney went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Drawdy and Wagner were 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Johnson started the game for the Bombers and pitched four and two thirds innings. He gave up 10 runs, six earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Jasper Pitts pitched the final inning and a third and gave up three earned runs on four hits with one walk.

Game 2: Brookings 16, Pierre 6

After falling behind 4-1 in the first two and a half innings the Bombers were able to outscore Pierre 15-2 the rest of the way and salvaged a doubleheader split game two behind 15 hits.

Pierre took a 3-0 lead in the first with a three-run home run. Brookings was able to cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second. Johnson reached on an error and Delbridge and Nielsen hit back-to-back singles to load the bases up. Delbridge then scored on a passed ball for Brookings first run of the game.

Pierre added a run in third with an RBI double, but Brookings then took the lead with six runs in the bottom of the inning. McSweeney and Mason Burzlaff were hit by pitches and Drawdy walked to load the bases up with no outs. All three runners scored on an error and Jones hit an RBI single to tie it up at 4-4.

Johnson followed that with an RBI single of his own and Jones scored on an error to make it 6-4. Wagner then hit an RBI single to make it 7-4 heading into the fourth.

A two-run single from Pierre cut the lead to 7-6, but three runs from the Bombers pushed the lead to 10-6. Mason Burzlaff hit an RBI double and then scored on an error. Mason Burghardt followed with an RBI double and the Bombers took a four-run lead into the fifth.

The Bombers then scored six runs in the fifth to end the game. McSweeney hit an RBI double and that was followed by a Burzlaff RBI single. Drawdy followed that with a two-run single. Then back-to-back RBI singles from Johnson and Delbridge made it 16-6 and ended the game.

Burghardt was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Burzlaff was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Johnson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Drawdy was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Delbridge was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Jones was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Wagner and McSweeney were each 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Jones pitched the first three innings for the Bombers. He gave up six runs, five earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and six walks. Burghardt pitched the final two innings and gave up just one hit.
