Huntimer’s big night leads to doubleheader sweep for Brookings Bombers Red

TEA — Jennings Huntimer had three inside the park home runs and knocked in 10 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Tea for the Brookings Bombers Red 13U team on Tuesday night.

The Bombers beat Tea 16-8 in game one and then scored 16 runs again in game two, winning 16-6. Brookings is now 25-11 on the season and plays a doubleheader at Sioux Falls East on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 16, Tea 8

Huntimer knocked in five RBIs and had two of Brookings’ 13 hits in game one to lead them to the win.

The Bombers jumped out to a 13-1 lead after the first two innings. They scored five runs in the first inning. Dario McSweeney led off the inning with a walk and Mason Burzlaff followed with a single. McSweeney came home on a Cooper Drawdy ground out and Hayden Jones hit Burzlaff home with a single to make it 2-0. Huntimer then hit a two-run inside the park home run and Ty Johnson hit an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Jasper Pitts was hit by a pitch, Brady Nutter hit a double and Hayden Smidt was walked to load the bases up with no outs in the second for Brookings. Pitts scored on a fielder’s choice and Nutter scored on a bases loaded walk to make it 7-0. Smidt then came home on a wild pitch and McSweeney scored on a passed ball to make it 9-0. Burzlaff scored on a fielder’s choice and Ty Delbridge hit Drawdy home with a single to make it 11-0. Johnson then hit a two-run single to give Brookings a 13-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second.

Tea scored its first run of the game on a passed ball in the bottom of the second. Huntimer then hit his second two-run inside the park home run in the top of the fourth to put the Bombers up 15-1.

Tea loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and scored runs on a wild pitch and a ground out. Then an RBI single and two runs from an error cut the lead to 15-6 heading into the fifth.

Nutter hit a double to lead off the fifth and then scored on a dropped third strike. Tea scored two more runs on an error in the bottom of the inning and that made the final 16-8.

Johnson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Jones and Delbridge were each 1-for-1 with an RBI. McSweeney was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Burzlaff was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Nutter was 2-for-2 and Carter Nielsen and Pitts were each 1-for-2.

Pitts got the start on the mound for the Bombers and pitched three and two thirds innings. He gave up six runs, three earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Nutter pitched the final inning and a third and gave up two unearned runs on one hit with one strikeout and three walks.

Game 2: Brookings 16, Tea 6

The Bombers drew 14 walks and Tea had three errors and that led to the 10-run victory in game two for Brookings.

Brookings led 5-1 after the first two innings. Johnson reached on an error to lead off the game and Huntimer did it again as he hit another two-run inside the park home run.

Cooper Drawdy reached on an error to begin the second and then back-to-back singles from Burzlaff and Nutter loaded the bases with nobody out. Beau Thompson hit both Drawdy and Burzlaff home with a single and Nutter scored on a ground out to make it 5-0. Tea scored their run on a single.

Jones hit a lead-off double in the third and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0. Tea then scored two runs on ground outs in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-3 heading into the fourth. Thompson and Pitts each walked in the fourth and then Thompson scored on a steal of home and Pitts scored on a Wagner ground out to make it 8-3. Huntimer was hit by a pitch in the fifth and scored on a passed ball to make it 9-3.

Tea scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth but then Brookings put the game away in the sixth seven runs. Three straight walks to begin the inning loaded the bases and then two more walks made it 11-4. Then a bases-loaded triple from Huntimer made it 14-4. Drawdy then hit a two-run double to make it 16-4. Tea hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the inning to make the final 16-6.

Brookings had seven hits in the game. Huntimer was 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Thompson was 1-for-1 with two RBIs Drawdy was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Burzlaff was 1-for-2 and Nutter was 1-for-3.

Johnson pitched a complete game for the Bombers. He gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and five walks.
