Elkton-Lake Benton pulled off the shocker of the night in high school softball as the No. 16 seeded Lady Elks took down No. 1 seeded Bon Homme 8-7 in the Class B SoDak 16 and advanced to the State Tournament.

No. 16 Elkton-Lake Benton shocks No. 1 Bon Homme

TYNDALL — Elkton-Lake Benton pulled off the shocker of the night in high school softball as the No. 16 seeded Lady Elks took down No. 1 seeded Bon Homme 8-7 in the Class B SoDak 16 and advanced to the State Tournament.

ELB (7-10) jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the first two and a half innings and were able to stave off a late rally from the Cavaliers (19-5).

The Lady Elks went up 1-0 in the first inning. Kylie Ramlo reached on an error with two outs and then was hit home by a single from Payton Kuehl to give ELB the one-run lead.

ELB then scored six runs in the top of the third. Abbie Timm reached on an error to lead off the inning and Kylie Ramlo followed with a single. Timm then came home on a Kuehl double and Kuehl was hit home on a Ashya Flores single to make it 3-0. Jocelyn Prosch then hit an RBI single and Jalyn Frerichs was walked with the bases loaded. Matti Ramlo followed with an RBI single and the Lady Elks took a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the third.

Bon Homme scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. The first two runs came on a sacrifice fly and the next one was on a ground out to make it 7-3 heading into the fourth. The Cavaliers came within two in the bottom of the fourth as two bases loaded walks made it 7-5 heading into the fifth.

ELB added another run in the top of the sixth as Kylie Ramlo hit a single and she was hit home on a Flores single to make it 8-5. The Lady Elks held the Cavaliers scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.

Bon Homme then came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with its season on the line. The Cavaliers got their first two batters on base and both runners scored on a single and a ground out to cut the lead to one with two outs. However, Matti Ramlo forced a ground out and the Lady Elks punched their ticket to the State Tournament in their first season as a program.

ELB had nine hits as a team. Kuehl was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Matti Ramlo was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Flores was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Prosch was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Kylie Ramlo was 2-for-4.

Kylie Ramlo pitched the first three and a third innings. She gave up five runs, three earned, and gave up no hits with six strikeouts and 12 walks. Matti Ramlo pitched the final three and two thirds and gave up two unearned runs on two hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

ELB will be the No. 8 seed in the State Tournament which starts on May 30 in Aberdeen. The Lady Elks will play No. 1 seeded Castlewood at 10 a.m.
