Rangers improve to 2-0 at National Championship Tournament

Owen Schneider scores twice, Luke Honkomp has two assists to lead Brookings over Florida's North Broward

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — The Rangers improved to 2-0 at the USA Hockey-Chipotle High School Division 1 National Championship Tournament, defeating North Broward (Fla.) 4-2 on Thursday morning.

The win was fueled by a pair of early goals in the first period. Owen Schneider scored a power play goal from Jay Harris and Riley Linstad at 9:30 of the first period and Harris followed up with his second goal of the tournament from Luke Honkomp at 11:51.

Brian Pine scored an unassisted goal at 15:15 of the first period to cut the Rangers lead down to 2-1 but Schneider scored his third goal of the tournament shorthanded to give Brookings a 3-1 lead at 14:48 of the second period.

Jack Merritt piled on with his first goal of the tournament from Honkomp at 2:59 of the third period and North Broward’s Brendan Singleton scored from Cole Rosen Nossen and Aspen Charow to cap the scoring at 11:02 of the third period.

Egan Jensen made 29 saves in the win while Bladen Darling made 36 saves for North Broward in the loss. Brookings out-shot North Broward 40-31.

The Rangers continue to be in first place in the NHL pool at the tournament with six points. North Broward fell to 1-1-0 with the loss and is tied with the Jesuit Rangers (Texas) with three points. Oakdale is in last place after losing its first two games.

The Rangers own a 35-1-1 overall record this season and will face Jesuit in their final game in pool play on Friday at 7 a.m. CDT.
