Sioux Valley rolls Sisseton in Homecoming game

Cossacks improve to 4-0 after beating Redmen 56-12

VOLGA — The Sioux Valley football team routed Sisseton in its homecoming game on Friday night, 56-12.

The No. 2 ranked Cossacks did most of their damage in the first half as they led 42-6 at halftime. Wyatt Hardt and Maverick Nelson got the scoring going a little under one minute into the game as the two connected for a 58-yard touchdown to make it 7-0. Mitchell Guthmiller then scored a 50-yard rushing touchdown to make it 14-0 with 4:32 left in the first quarter.

Sioux Valley had one more score in the first as Hardt threw a 28-yard touchdown to Brody Haaland to make it 21-0 Cossacks heading into the second. Hardt wasn’t down with long touchdowns though as he connected with Guthmiller for an 80-yard bomb, making it 28-0 with 11:47 left in the first half.

Brock Christopherson then got in on the action as he had a 48-yard touchdown run to make it 35-0. Sisseton got on the board with 7:07 left in the second quarter as Caden Gibson hit Hayden Hellwig for a 65-yard touchdown, but the Redman missed the extra point. Johnnie Vermuelen scored the final touchdown of the half as he ran one in from three yards out with 3:51 left in the half.

Hardt scored on an eight-yard run a little under two minutes into the second half. Weston Pitts ran in the two-point conversion to make it 50-6. Gibson ran for a 32-yard score four minutes later but the Redmen failed to convert on the two-point conversion. Tyson Norgaard had the final touchdown of the night for the Cossacks, running it into the end zone from four yards out with four minutes left in the fourth.

Sioux Valley had 511 yards of offense. 345 of those yards came on the ground. Hardt had 84 yards on five carries. Christopherson had 81 yards on five carries. Guthmiller and Vermeulen each had 59 yards.

Hardt was 3-for-3 with 166 yards. Guthmiller, Nelson and Haaland each had one catch that went for a touchdown.

The Cossack defense was led by Vermeulen and Pitts who eac hd eight tackles. Braden Danzeisen had seven tackles and Holdyn Ruesink had a fumble recovery.

Sioux Valley is now 4-0 and plays at Deuel on Friday at 7 p.m.
