Forty-eight of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

BROOKINGS – The state on Wednesday reported 1,585 new COVID-19 cases and five deaths in South Dakota in the past week, along with a major drop in active cases. 

Forty-eight of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

The data does not include at-home test results.

Brookings County cases have increased to 8,735 total cases (48 new confirmed and probable): 8,645 of those people have recovered (161 new) with 32 active cases (down by 113) and 58 deaths (no change). A total of 236 people (two new) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

The Brookings hospital has no COVID-19 occupied hospital beds, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “high” community spread category. 

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 256,255 (1,585 new confirmed and probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the SDDOH.

Of the statewide cases, 1,114 are classified as active (down by 3,096 from last Wednesday). As of this Wednesday, 252,157 people have recovered (4,676 new), 11,528 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (72 new), 105 people are currently hospitalized (up by 11) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,984 people with COVID have died (five new).

The new deaths, two men and three women, are being reported in Davison, Day, Hughes, Minnehaha and Pennington counties. The age ranges of the deceased are three 60-69 years and two 80 years or older.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 1,290,937 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 533,381 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System.

In Brookings County, 50,513 vaccine doses have been administered to 20,755 people, the SDDOH website reports.

The SDDOH reports 75% of the state population age 5 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, 61% have completed their vaccination series, and 34% have received a booster dose.
