Brookings Bobcats win two games out west

The Brookings softball team wrapped up the regular season with three games in the west side of the state over the weekend. The Bobcats headed back east with two wins and finished with a record of 9-7.

Brookings Bobcats win two games out west

The Brookings softball team wrapped up the regular season with three games in the west side of the state over the weekend. The Bobcats headed back east with two wins and finished with a record of 9-7.

The Bobcats will be the No. 8 seed in Tuesday’s Class AA SoDak 16. They will host Watertown at 6 p.m. with a trip to the State Tournament on the line.

Friday

Brookings 16 Sturgis Brown 5 (6 inn.)

STURGIS — An eight-run fourth inning broke the game open for Brookings and four runs in the sixth from the Bobcats ended the game due to the 10-run rule.

Brookings led 1-0 after the top of the first. Kylie Moe and Sydney Bebensee were both hit by pitches with one out. Moe advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on an error. Sturgis answered with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to give the Scoopers a 2-1 lead heading into the second.

The Bobcats tied the game in the top of the third. Moe led off the inning with a double and then stole third. She scored on a steal of home to make it 2-2. A two-run double in the bottom of the third put the Scoopers up 3-2. That’s when the Bobcats took control.

Kinzey Grendler led off the fourth with a double and then scored on a passed ball. Moe was walked with the bases loaded to give the Bobcats the lead and Bebensee followed with a two-run single to put the ‘Cats up 6-3. Kymber Buys followed with a two-run double and Megan Wadsworth hit a two-run double of her own to make it 10-3.

Sturgis got one run back with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, but Brookings scored two runs in the top of the fifth. Bebensee singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a Buys single. Both runners then made their way home on a single from Tess Burns, making it 12-4. The Scoopers scored a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the inning.

Six walks in the sixth inning scored three runs for the Bobcats and a passed ball gave them another run, making the final 16-5.

Brookings had 10 hits in the game. Bebensee was 1-for-1 with three RBIs and Burns was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Buys was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Wadsworth went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Tessa Twedt went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Burns pitched the first four innings for the Bobcats. She gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Moe pitched the final two innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Brookings 17, Spearfish 3 (5 inn.)

SPEARFISH — The Bobcats jumped out to an 11-0 lead and didn’t look back. They scored three runs in the first inning. Bebensee walked with two outs and then scored on a double from Burns. Burns scored on a wild pitch and Layla Jacobsma hit an RBI double to make it 3-0.

Keisha Cushing led off the second inning with a walk. Moe walked as well and both runners were sent home on a double from Bebensee. She scored on an error and an RBI single from Jacobsma hit an RBI single to make it 7-0.

Grendler followed with an RBI single and two runs scored on an error to make it 10-0. The final run of the inning came on an RBI single from Buys.

Spearfish scored two runs in the third. The first came on a double and the second on a ground out. But Brookings pushed the lead back to 11 in the top of the fourth. Grendler walked and Wadsworth singled with one out. Buys then hit a double to left field to make it 13-2.

The Bobcats added four more runs in the fifth. Bebensee singled to lead off the inning and scored on a single from Jacobsma. She scored on a ground out from Wadsworth and a two-run single from Cushing made it 17-2. The Spartans scored a run on a single in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to cut the lead under 10 and the game ended.

The Bobcats had 12 hits. Jacobsma was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Buys was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Wadsworth was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and Bebensee was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Cushing was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Grendler and Burns were each 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Burns pitched the first two innings for the ‘Cats. She gave up no runs on one hit with three strikeouts and one walk. Moe pitched the final three innings and gave up three unearned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Saturday

Rapid City Stevens 7, Brookings 5

RAPID CITY — The Raiders came back from a 5-0 deficit to hand the Bobcats their only loss of the weekend.

Brookings led 5-0 after the top of the second. Burns came to plate with two outs and two runners on in the first and hit one over the center field wall to put the ‘Cats up 3-0. Jacobsma walked to lead off the first and came around to score on a passed ball. Grendler hit a single and then scored on a Moe single to make it 5-0.

Rapid City Stevens’ comeback began in the next half inning as the Raiders got on the scoreboard with a run from an error. They then tied the game in the third. The first run of the inning came on a passed ball and the next was on a wild pitch. A two-run double then made it 5-5 heading into the fourth.

Stevens then took the lead in the fifth as the Raiders scored one run on an error. A solo home run in the sixth then made it 7-5 heading into the seventh. Burns walked with one out but ground out’s from Twedt and Jacobsma ended the game.

Burns was 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Jacobsma, Grendler and Wadsworth were each 1-for-3. Moe was 1-for-2 and Twedt was 1-for-4.

Burns pitched the first three innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on two hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Moe pitched the final three innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
