The Brookings Bombers Black 14U baseball team posted a perfect weekend, winning all four games to win the Pete Lien Memorial Tournament.

Brookings Bombers Black wins 14U Pete Lien Memorial Tournament

RAPID CITY — The Brookings Bombers Black 14U baseball team posted a perfect weekend, winning all four games to win the Pete Lien Memorial Tournament.

With wins over the Rapid City Comets, Rapid City Cadets, Spearfish and the Rapid City Sliders, the Bombers improved to 20-4 ahead of Tuesday’s doubleheader with Renner at 5 p.m. at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings.

Friday

Brookings 11, Rapid City Comets 6

The Bombers started the tournament strong as Ben Schulte recorded three hits including a double in an 11-6 win over the Comets

Brookings got on the board first with a two-out rally in the top of the first inning. Baker Hanson reached on an error and advanced to second base before stealing third base and scored on Schulte’s first hit of the game to put the Bombers up 1-0.

The Comets got the run back when Bradley Woidt scored on an error in the bottom of the first inning but Brookings regained the lead after opening the top of the second with singles by Mason Diers and Dixon Dauer. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Grant Horn struck out for the first out of the inning but Eli Ellsworth was hit with a pitch to load the bases and two runs scored on an error during Jude Meendering’s at-bat and Nolan Krogman drove in a run with a ground out to give Brookings a 4-1 lead.

The Bombers kept going in the top of the third inning when Ben Schulte led off with a double, Noah Lease singled and Diers drove in a pair of runs with a double. Horn and Krogman each drove in runs with singles later in the third inning before Meendering scored on a passed ball, and Schulte drove in another run with a single to give Brookings an 11-1 lead.

The Comets extended the game when Cole Jansen scored on an error in the bottom of the third inning and Rapid City scored a run on a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning and two runs on Trevin Walker’s single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Meendering earned the win on the mound, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over five innings.

Diers went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Dauer went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Krogman went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Lease went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored. Horn went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Hanson drew a walk, scored twice and stole two bases. Schulte also finished with a stolen base, a walk, and three RBI.

Saturday

Brookings 16, Spearfish 0 (3 Inn.)

Brookings scored eight runs in the first and second innings to defeat Spearfish 16-0 in three innings via the 15-run rule.

The Bombers’ first-inning rally began when Krogman was hit with a pitch with one out. After Krogman stole second, Lease singled to allow Krogman to advance to third and Lease advanced on a defensive indifference before Hanson drove in Krogman for the first run of the game.

Kooper Henderson drew a walk in the next at-bat to load the bases before Dauer drove in two runs with a single to make it 3-0. Jace Jaacks struck out for the second out of the inning but Horn drove in two runs with a single, Meendering drove in two more runs with a double and Krogman drove in a run with a double to put Brookings up 8-0.

Hanson and Henderson led off the second inning with singles before Hanson stole home and Dauer delivered an RBI triple to put the Bombers ahead 10-0. Dauer scored on a wild pitch before Jaacks and Helmbolt each walked and Jaacks scored on a double steal to make it a 12-0 game. Meendering and Krogman each drew walks before Lease popped out for the second out of the inning but Hanson, Henderson, Dauer and Jaacks each drew bases-loaded walks before Helmbolt struck out to end the inning.

Hanson tossed three shutout innings on the mound, allowing one walk and striking out four batters.

Dauer went 2-for-2 with a triple, a walk, two runs scored and four RBI. Meendering went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. Hanson went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, a walk, three runs scored and two RBI. Krogman went 1-for-1 with a walk, a double, a stolen base, two runs scored and an RBI.

Lease went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Henderson went 1-for-1 with two walks, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Jaacks drew two walks, stole two bases, scored a run and drove in a run. Horn went 1-for-1 with twi RBI and a run scored. Andrew Hove went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Brookings 10, Rapid City Cadets 9

The Bombers overcame an early 5-1 deficit to pick up a 10-9 win over Rapid City on Saturday afternoon.

Brookings got on the board first when Meendering led off the game with a single and scored on Hanson’s groundout in the top of the first inning. But the Cadets responded with five runs in the bottom of the second inning highlighted by a two-run single by Camden Cline, an RBI groundout by Daxton Karn and a single by Brixton Steen.

The Bombers quickly erased the 5-1 hole in the top of the third inning when Meendering, Krogman and Hanson led off the inning with three straight singles. Schulte drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run of the inning and Lease drove in two runs with a single to cut the lead to 5-4.

Schulte scored on Henderson’s sacrifice fly to tie the game in the following at-bat and Dauer gave the Bombers the lead with an RBI single.

Rapid City jumped back in front on Cline’s RBI single and a run on an error in the bottom of the third inning but Brookings took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning. Down 8-6, Jaacks hit a double to lead off the fourth before Meendering singled and Krogman walked to load the bases. Hanson drove in a run with a single and Schulte drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 8-8 and Henderson gave Brookings a 9-8 lead with a bases-loaded walk two batters later.

Brookings extended its lead on Schulte’s sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning and Rapid City scored a run before leaving the tying run on second base in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Meendering went 3-for-3 in the win with two stolen bases and four runs scored. Hanson went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Krogman went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Schulte went 1-for-1 with two walks, a run scored and three RBI. Lease went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Dauer went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jaacks went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Henderson drew a walk and drove in two runs.

Krogman pitched all five innings, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits and six walks with three strikeouts.

Sunday

Brookings 13, Rapid City Sliders 11

The Bombers jumped out to a seven-run lead and held on as they wrapped up the tournament with a win over the Sliders on Sunday afternoon.

Brookings scored first in the top of the first inning when Meendering walked and Hanson was hit with a pitch with one out. Meendering scored on a passed ball later in the inning for the first run of the game.

The Bombers put together another threat in the top of the second inning when Diers and Horn each reached on errors and the Bombers scored another run on an error to go ahead 2-0.

Brookings broke the game open with a bases-loaded walk by Jaacks, a three-run triple by Meendering and another run on a passed ball in the top of the third inning before the Sliders scored eight times in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by RBI singles by Johnson and O’Connor.

The Bombers tied the game at 8-8 on a fielder’s choice in the top of the fourth inning but the Sliders took a 10-8 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Cuny’s RBI double and an RBI single by Wood.

Krogman led off the top of the fifth inning by getting hit with a pitch and scored on a Hanson triple that cut the lead down to 10-9. Lease grounded out to drive in Hanson later in the inning before Henderson walked and scored on a Meendering double to take an 11-10 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

The Bombers created some breathing room with a Hanson RBI single and a run-scoring when Dauer was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded later in the sixth inning. Wood doubled in a run to cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth buy Diers got O’Connor to strike out to end the game.

Meendering went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, a walk, a stolen base, three runs scored and three RBI. Hanson went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, a run scored and two RBI. Krogman went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Henderson went 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs scored.

Dauer went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Diers walked once and scored a run. Horn walked once and scored a run. Jaacks walked once, stole a base, scored a run and drove in two runs. Andrew Hove recorded an RBI and Schulte drew a walk.

Lease started the game, allowing six earned runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts over 2.2 innings. Diers finished the game allowing five earned runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
