BROOKINGS — A sacrifice fly from Jake Ammann sent Henry Hammrich home in the bottom of the ninth and gave the Brookings Cubs a walk-off victory over the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels at Bob Shelden Field on Monday night.

Ammann came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out and hit a fly ball to right field, which allowed Hammrich to put the Cubs up 8-7 and end an entertaining game.

Sioux Falls scored the first run of the game in the first inning. Zach Dibble led off the game with a double and then made his way home on a single from Dylan Ades.

Brookings would then score four runs in the second to go in front. Tyler Kruetner walked to begin the inning and Trevor Wookey followed with a single. Kruetner scored on a Zach Shastay single and Justin Cofell sent Wookey home with a single of his own. Shastay scored on an error by the catcher and Rhett Zelinsky hit an RBI double to put the Cubs up 4-1 heading into the third.

The Flying Squirrels got one run back in the top of the third. Dibble walked to begin the inning and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Jack Simonsen, making it 4-2 through two and a half innings.

However, the Cubs pushed the lead back to three in the bottom of the third. Hammrich hit a single to lead off the inning and made his way to third on a double from Ammann. Hammrich then scored on an error by the third baseman and the Cubs led 5-2.

Brookings added another run in the fifth. Wookey hit a one-out single and then scored on a single from Shastay to make it 6-2.

Sioux Falls would then tie the game up in the seventh. Dane Mediger began the inning with a single and Ades followed with a double. Simonsen then hit both runners home with a double of his own and cut the lead to 6-4. Simonsen scored on an error and another run from an error later in the inning made it 6-6 heading into the eighth.

Neither team scored in the eighth, but the Flying Squirrels gained the lead in the top of the ninth as Simonsen led off the inning with a home run over the center field fence. The Cubs weren’t dead yet though as Zelinsky led off the bottom of the inning with a single and then scored on a double from Noah Buss. An intentional walk and a single from Kruetner then loaded the bases up with nobody out and that set up Ammann’s heroics.

Brookings had 15 hits as a team in the win. Shastay was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Zelinsky was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Amman was 1-for-3, Cofell was 1-for-4 and Buss was 1-for-5. All three of those players had an RBI. Kruetner was 2-for-4 and Hammrich was 1-for-4. Wookey and Jamison Honkomp were each 2-for-5.

Shastay got the start on the mound for the Cubs and pitched the first six innings. He gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Craig Lasley came in in the seventh and did not record an out. He gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits. Amman pitched the final three innings and got the win.
