Brookings Cubs win tournament in Pipestone

PIPESTONE, Minn. — The Brookings Cubs won an amateur tournament over the weekend in Pipeston, Minnesota.

The Cubs beat the Pipestone A’s on Friday and followed that with a victory over the Wabasso Jaxx on Saturday. Brookings then took on the Larchwood Diamonds in the championship on Sunday and dominated that game.
Brookings is now 8-1 and plays at Elkton on Wednesday. That game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. The Cubs will then host the Milroy (MN) Yankees on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Friday

Brookings 13, Pipestone (Minn.) 2 (7 inn.)

The Cubs led off the tournament with a win via the 10-run rule in seven innings.

Brookings trailed 2-1 at the end of the first inning. Jamison Honkomp hit a one-out double for the Cubs and then advanced to third on a Rhett Zelinsky single. He then made his way home on a ground out from Noah Buss to make it 1-0. The A’s then took the lead by scoring two runs on an error in the bottom of the inning.

The Cubs regained the lead in the top of the second and never looked back. Tucker Wookey led off the inning with a single and Justin Cofell hit a two-out single to put two runners on. Both runners then scored on a double from Henry Hammrich and that made it 3-2 heading into the third.

Honkomp and Zelinsky led off the top of the third with back-to-back walks. Both runners scored on a Buss double to make it 5-2. Buss then scored on an error to make it 6-2 heading into the fourth.

Brookings extended the lead to 9-2 in the fourth as Honkomp scored on an error and Buss scored on a Noel Burgos single. A two-run triple from Zelinsky then made it 11-2 heading into the sixth.

The Cubs then ended the game in the seventh. Cofell was walked to lead off the inning and Hammrich was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Buss was then walked to load the bases up and Burgos hit a two-run single to make it 13-2. Pipestone went down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning and Brookings won due to the 10-run rule.

Brookings had 11 hits that resulted in 11 RBIs. Buss went 2-for-4 with four RBIS and Burgos was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Hammrich was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Wookey was 2-for-4. Cofell was 1-for-2 and Honkomp was 1-for-3.

Jake Ammann pitched the first six innings for Brookings. He gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits with 13 strikeouts and no walks. Craig Lasley pitched the final inning and gave up no runs and no hits.

Saturday

Brookings 9, Wabasso (Minn.) 0 (7 inn.)

Henry Hammrich pitched a complete game shutout for the Cubs. He gave up one hit and had 10 strikeouts and two walks.

Brookings led 1-0 at the end of the first. Honkomp was hit by a pitch with one out and Zelinsky followed that with a double. Buss was hit by a pitch as well and that loaded the bases up and Tyler Kruetner hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

The Cubs doubled their lead in the third. Buss came to the plate with outs and hit one over the right field wall to make it 2-0.

Brookings extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth. Cofell was walked with one out and then scored on a Zelinsky single. Buss followed the Zelinsky single with a two-run double and Burgos hit an RBI single to make it 6-0.

The Cubs added three more runs in the seventh. Burgos led off the inning with a double and Wookey followed that with a single. Burgos scored on an error and Wookey came home on a Hammrich single. Honkomp followed that with an RBI single of his own to make it 9-0. Wabasso got two runners on in the bottom of the inning but was unable to score any runs and the game ended.

Brookings had 10 hits as a team. Buss was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Zelinsky was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Burgos was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Honkomp was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Hammrich was 1-for-5 with an RBI and Wookey was 1-for-4. Lasley did not have a hit but had an RBI.

Sunday

Brookings 10, Larchwood (Iowa) 0 (6 inn.)

The Cubs did not play a full game again on Sunday as they won the championship in six innings.

Zach Shastay pitched a complete game shutout for Brookings. He gave up on hit and had 12 strikeouts and two walks.

Brookings scored two runs in the top of the first. Kruetner and Hammrich both walked to begin the game. Hammrich scored on an error and Burgos hit an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The Cubs added a run in the fourth. Burgos was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and he rounded the bases on a triple from Shastay to make it 3-0.

Zelinsky reached on a fielder’s choice in the fifth and then scored on an error by the catcher, making it 4-0 heading into the sixth. That’s when the Cubs scored six runs and were able to end the game.

Wookey led off the sixth with a double and scored on a single from Lasley. Lasley then scored on a single from Cofell to make it 6-0. Kruetner followed that with an RBI single and Cofell scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0. Buss then hit an RBI double and Brgos followed that with an RBI single to make it 10-0. Larchwood went down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning and the Cubs won the title.

Brookings had 11 hits. Burgos was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Shastay and Cofell were each 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kreutner was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Buss was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Lasley was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Wookey was 2-for-4.
