Chutes go 3-1 at Sioux Falls Invitational

Brookings makes its way to tournament's semifinals this past weekend

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Chutes had a solid weekend, going 3-1 and reaching the championship game of the Sioux Falls Invitational Tournament.

The Chutes improved to 9-5 and will host Renner for a doubleheader at Bob Shelden Field at 12 p.m. Wednesday.

Friday

Brookings 12, Northrop 8

Three players had multi-hit games as the Chutes won their first game of the tournament over Northrop on Friday night.

The Giants got on the board with a fielder’s choice in the top of the second inning before Brookings responded with three runs in the bottom of the second. Breck Wilson and Nolan Wagner drew back-to-back walks with one out to begin the rally before Hyde drove in a run with a single to tie the game at 1-1.

Tre Christopherson drew a walk four batters later to give the Chutes the lead and Cooper Schneider was hit with a pitch to drive in a run that put Brookings ahead 3-1.

Northrop jumped back in front when two runs scored on an error and another on a fielder’s choice in the top of the third inning but Brookings rallied in the bottom of the third inning.

Wagner and Talon Hyde led off the third with walks before Kysin Rauer was hit with a pitch to load the bases. Maxten Jensen singled to drive in a run but an error allowed Wagner and Hyde to score to put the Chutes ahead 5-4. Rauer scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat to give Brookings a 6-4 lead.

Brookings added two more runs on errors to go ahead 8-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning but the Giants weren’t done, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it an 8-7 game.

The Chutes created some breathing room in the bottom of the fifth, however, when Gavin Hammrich drove in a run with a single, Jay Harris scored on a balk, Wagner drove in a run with a double and Hyde drove in a run with a single.

Northrop got a run on Owen Terfehr’s groundout in the top of the sixth inning but the Chutes held on to win.

Hyde went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, three runs scored and two RBI. Wagner went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks, four runs scored and an RBI. Jensen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Christopherson drew two walks. Harris went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Hammrich went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Wilson walked and scored a run. Rysin walked twice and scored a run.

Wagner allowed seven runs (two earned) on four hits and five walks with five strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Schneider allowed an unearned run on two hits in the final 1.1 innings.

Saturday

Brookings 8, Springfield 0 (5 Inn.)

Hyde went the distance, allowing two hits and a walk with four strikeouts in a five-inning win over Springfield on Saturday morning.

Brookings gave Hyde some early run support when Harris’s triple led to Anderson’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning. Rauer was hit with a pitch in the next at-bat and scored on Jensen’s double before Jensen scored on an error to go ahead 3-0.

The Chutes added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning when Wagner walked and Hammrich singled before Hyde used an RBI single to make it a 4-0 game.

Brookings added four runs on RBI singles by Schneider and Wagner, a sacrifice fly by Hammrich and a bases-loaded walk by Harris to break the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Hyde went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI. Jensen went 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Schneider went 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. Wagner went 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Hammrich went drew a walk with an RBI and a stolen base. Harris went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Harris drew a walk, scored a run and stole a base. Christopherson stole two bases and scored a run.

Brookings 17, Thief River Falls 5

Hyde drove in four runs and seven total players recorded an RBI as the Chutes defeated Thief River Falls on Saturday afternoon.

Brookings took control of the game early, scoring eight runs in the top of the first inning. Christopherson led off the game with a single and stole second base before getting tagged out on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Schneider.

Wagner was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat and the rally looked bleak when Hammrich popped out for the second out of the inning. But Schneider stole third base and scored on Hyde’s single. An error on the play also allowed Wagner to score for a 2-0 lead.

Harris and Wilson drew walks to load the bases before Anderson was hit with a pitch to put Brookings up 3-0. Jensen drew a walk to make it a 4-0 lead and Christopherson drove in two runs with a single before Schneider delivered a two-run triple to put the Chutes up 8-0.

Thief River Falls rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first, coming on RBI singles from Urijah Fox and Jed Kelly and a wild pitch, but Brookings extended its lead in the top of the second inning.

Hammrich led off the second with a walk before stealing second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch. The aggressive baserunning allowed Hammrich to score on Hyde’s RBI single and Harris walked to put two runners on base.

Hyde advanced to third on a wild pitch before Harris stole second. An error on Harris’s stolen base attempt allowed Hyde to score and Wilson struck out for the first out of the inning but Anderson drew a walk and Harris scored on a fielder’s choice to make it an 11-3 game.

Fox drove in a run on a triple and scored on Cole Johnson’s single to cut the lead to 11-5 in the bottom of the second inning but Brookings’s lineup kept producing.

Hammrich reached on a dropped third strike to lead off the top of the third inning and advanced to third base on Hyde’s groundout and scored on an error by Gabe Haugen.

Christopherson led off the top of the fourth with a walk, advanced to third base on Schneider’s single and scored on a double steal that put Brookings ahead 13-5.

Brookings added a run on an error, another run on a Hyde triple and two runs on an inside-the-park home run by Harris later in the fourth inning to cap the scoring.

Rauer started the game for Brookings, allowing four earned runs on two hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Christopherson pitched the final three innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and a walk.

Hyde finished 3-for-4 with a triple, a stolen base, three runs scored and three RBI. Harris went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, two walks, three stolen bases, three runs scored and two RBI. Christopherson went 2-for-2 with two walks, four stolen bases, two runs scored and two RBI. Schneider went 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases, two runs scored and two RBI. Wilson went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored. Anderson drew two walks with a run scored and an RBI. Jensen drew a walk with a run scored and two RBI.

Sunday

St. Peter 7, Brookings 6

The Chutes wrapped up the tournament by falling to Ryan Moelter’s walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning of Sunday afternoon’s championship game.

St. Peter took the lead on a single by Finley Olson and jumped ahead 3-0 on Carter Wills’s two-run single in the bottom of the first inning. But Brookings used a two-out rally to jump ahead in the top of the second inning, which started with a single by Harris.

Wilson was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat before Anderson singled to load the bases. Jensen drew a walk for the Chutes’ first run of the game and another run scored on an error to cut the lead to 3-2.

Schneider gave the Chutes a 4-3 lead with a two-run single in the next at-bat and Christopherson stole home to give Brookings a 5-3 lead.

St. Peter tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning and took the lead on Moelter’s RBI double in the bottom of the third. The Saints’ lead held until the top of the seventh inning when the Chutes loaded the bases with one out but only came away with an RBI single by Wagner that tied the game at 6-6.

Kyler Link’s one-out single in the bottom of the seventh proved costly as Moelter delivered the walk-off single two batters later.

Harris started the game, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and five walks with two strikeouts. Schneider pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
