Chutes split doubleheader with Sioux Falls

Brookings improved to 10-6 ahead of today's doubleheader with Renner.

SIOUX FALLS – The Brookings Post 74 Chutes junior legion baseball team split a doubleheader with Sioux Falls on Tuesday night, winning the first game 6-1 and losing the second game 10-11

Brookings is now 10-6 on the season and will host a doubleheader with Renner today at noon.

Game One

Brookings 6, Sioux Falls 1

The Chutes started a rally in the top of the first inning when Tre Christopherson led off with a single and Tyson Antonen drew a one-out walk to put runners on the corners. Antonen stole second base before Bauer drove in a run with an RBI single and Antonen scored on a passed ball to give Brookings a 2-0 lead.

After Chris Logue cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning, Brookings responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Jay Harris led off the inning with a triple and scored on Maxten Jensen’s RBI ground out before Christopherson walked, Schneider was hit by a pitch and Antonen drove in a run on a single to give the Chutes a 4-1 lead.

Nolan Wagner and Harris each drove in runs with singles to cap the scoring in the top of the seventh inning.

Bauer went 4-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Christopherson 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Harris went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Antonen went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI. Wagner went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Gavin Hammrich went 1-for-4. Tane Friedrich drew two walks.

Bauer also threw a complete game on the mound, allowing one earned run on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Game Two

Sioux Falls 11, Brookings 10

Tyson Antonen started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to give Brookings a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but Sioux Falls tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Bandits jumped back in front on a two-run double by Christopherson and went ahead 4-2 on Cooper Schneider’s RBI double in the top of the second inning. Brookings extended its lead when Talon Hyde drove in a run with an RBI single in the top of the third inning but Sioux Falls tied it up with three more runs in the bottom of the third.

Ryker Anderson hit a double and was replaced by Jensen in the top of the fourth and Jensen scored on a wild pitch to give Brookings a 6-5 lead before Bauer added another run with an RBI double later in the inning.

The Bandits couldn’t hang onto the lead as Sioux Falls scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-7 lead before Christopherson tied the game again with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.

Sioux Falls went back in front with with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning but the Bandits had one final comeback, as Hammrich drove in a run with a single and Hyde drove in a run with a ground out to tie the game at 10 in the top of the sixth inning before Beckett Whitlock delivered the game-winning hit on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Christopherson went 3-for-5 with a double, two stolen bases, two runs scored and three RBI. Schneider went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Bauer went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Anderson went 2-for-3 with a double. Antonen went 1-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI. Harris went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Hyde went 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. Wagner drew a walk.

Friedrich allowed five runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks and a strikeout over 2.2 innings. Christopherson allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk with one strikeout over 2.1 innings. Breck Wilson allowed an unearned run on two hits over one inning.
