Bandits stay hot, sweep Huron doubleheader

The Brookings Bandits extended their hot streak, picking up their sixth win in the past seven games with a doubleheader sweep of Huron at Bob Shelden Field on Tuesday night.

Bandits stay hot, sweep Huron doubleheader

The Bandits won their sixth game in their last seven with two wins over Huron on Tuesday night.

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Bandits extended their hot streak, picking up their sixth win in the past seven games with a doubleheader sweep of Huron at Bob Shelden Field on Tuesday night.

The Bandits improved to 14-15 with the wins and will host Volga for one game at Bob Shelden Field at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Game One

Brookings 8, Huron 7

The Bandits withstood a five-run seventh inning to score a walk-off win over Huron in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Things looked good for Brookings early on as Zach Struck’s leadoff single led to a one-out, RBI double by Addison Ronning in the bottom of the second inning.

The Bandits extended their lead as part of a bases-loaded rally in the bottom of the third inning The rally began with a walk by Tate Helmbolt, a hit-by-pitch to Breck Hirrschoff and a walk by Owen Schneider and Struck drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to double the lead.

Nolan Miles drove in a pair of runs with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to give Brookings a 5-0 lead but Huron got on the board with RBI singles by Jackson Mattke and Branden Flowers in the top of the fourth inning.

A one-out double by Hirrschoff started another Brookings rally in the bottom of the fifth inning and Schneider delivered with an RBI single to put the Bandits up 6-2. Schneider advanced to second base on the throw and to third base on a passed ball in the next at-bat, allowing him to score on an RBI single by Struck.

Hirrschoff made sure the lead held up going into the seventh inning and picked up two groundouts to put the Bandits on the verge of victory. But Hirrschoff hit Kolton Ogle with a pitch and walked Brady Feenstra and Layne Wenzel to give Huron life.

Helmbolt came out of the bullpen but an error by Struck allowed a run to score to close the gap to 7-3. A bases-clearing triple by Jack Pedersen cut the lead down to 7-6 and Mattke delivered a game-tying double in the next at-bat to send the game to the bottom of the seventh.

In the final inning, Struck reached on a one-out single but was replaced by Miles on a fielder’s choice. Miles advanced to second on the play, which allowed him to score on Addison Ronning’s walk-off single.

Ronning went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Struck went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBI. Hirrschoff went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Schneider went 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Miles went 1-for-4 with a stolen base, three runs scored and two RBI. Jack Merritt went 1-for-3. Helmbolt drew a walk and scored a run.

Hirrschoff tossed 6.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. Helmbolt pitched 0.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits.

Game Two

Brookings 10, Huron 0 (6 Inn.)

The Bandits completed the sweep behind a complete game shutout by Will Conrad in the nightcap.

Conrad went all six innings, allowing just five hits with three strikeouts. With Conrad keeping Huron off the scoreboard, Brookings went to work giving him run support in the bottom of the first inning.

Helmbolt walked to lead off the inning and Hirrschoff followed up with a single. Schneider struck out for the first out of the inning but Helmbolt scored on a passed ball before a walk by Ronning and a Miles HBP loaded the bases. David Brink cashed in with a bases-clearing double in the next at-bat to put the Bandits up 4-0.

Brookings put together another rally in the bottom of the third. Miles and Brink singled to open the inning before Plummer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Miles scored on a wild pitch two pitches later before Jon Kahler drove in a run with a single to put the Bandits ahead 6-0.

The Bandits added two more runs on RBI singles by Kahler and Hirrschoff in the bottom of the fifth inning and scored two more runs on an error and a RBI single by Sam Johnson in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Hirrschoff went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Brink went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, three runs scored and three RBI. Kahler went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Miles went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Johnson went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Ryan Lockrem went 1-for-1 with a run scored. Helmbolt drew two walks and scored once. Ronning walked, stole a base and scored once. Plummer walked and scored once.
