Brookings Chutes sweep Yankton in doubleheader at Bob Shelden

ROOKINGS — Strong pitching and defense led to a doubleheader sweep against Yankton on Monday afternoon for the Brookings Junior Legion Chutes.

The Chutes won the first game 5-1 and then followed that with a 7-1 win in game two. Brookings gave up just five hits in the two games and had only two errors.

Brookings is now 4-4 on the season and will play a doubleheader in Fargo on Tuesday night. The first game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 5, Yankton 1

Breck Wilson pitched a complete game for the Chutes. He gave up two hits and had four strikeouts and two walks. The one run he gave up was unearned.

Brookings took the lead in the first inning with one run. Cooper Schneider hit a one-out single and then stole second base. He then came home on a single from Tyson Antonen and the Chutes led 1-0 heading into the second.

The Chutes extended their lead in the bottom of the third. Max Jensen led off the inning with a single and Schnedier and Antonen were then walked with one out to load the bases. Talon Hyde hit a pop up to the second baseman and the ball was dropped. Hyde was out on the play due to the infield fly rule but two runs came home on the error to make it 3-0. An RBI single from Jay Harris two batters later made it 4-0 heading into the fourth.

Yankton scored on a ground out in the top of the sixth but the Chutes got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Jensen hit a two-out double and Hammrich came in to run for him. Hammrich stole third and the catcher threw the ball over the third baseman’s head and he was able to make his way home to make it 5-1 heading into the final inning.

Wilson sent down Yankton one-two-three in the top of the seventh and the Chutes picked up the win in game one.

Brookings had six hits as a team. Antonen was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Harris was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jensen was 2-for-3 and Schneider was 1-for-3.

Game 2: Brookings 7, Yankton 1

The Chutes went up 3-0 in the first two innings and didn’t look back as they kept it rolling defensively in game two.

Brookings scored two runs in the first inning. Tre Christopherson reached on an error to begin the inning and then made his way to third on a single from Schneider. Christopehrson then scored on a sacrifice fly from Antonen and Schnedier scored on a ground out from Harris to make it 2-0.

Jensen hit a two-out single in the bottom of the second and then he made it to third on an error. Christopherson then hit Jensen home with a single, giving the Chutes a three-run lead heading into the third.

Yankton scored its only run of the game on a ground out in the top of the fourth. Brookings answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Tane Friedrich walked to begin the inning and then a one-out walk from Ryder Anderson put two runners on. One run scored on an error and then Schneider hit a two-run single to make it 6-1. Kysin Rauer then stole home in the bottom of the sixth to put the Chutes up 7-1 heading into the final half inning.

Yankton got one runner on in the seventh, but Rauer didn’t allow another base runner and the Chutes came away with the sweep.

Hyde pitched the first five innings for Brookings. He gave up one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Rauer pitched the final two innings and did not give up a hit. He had four strikeouts and a walk.

Brookings had six hits again. Schneider was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Christopherson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Antonen was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jensen was 1-for-3. Harris had an RBI without a hit.
